Monday was a day Coach Saren Thompson and I set as our picture day for the Bethel Cheerleading squad. As I arrived I knew it was going to be a hot day. Many of us sat in the VIP room of  the football stadium until all had arrived. For me personally, it was my first meeting with the group responsible to keep the crowds in the game and help promote the Bethel spirit.

It turned out to be more. It was good to meet the young people who are the front line ambassadors for Bethel University at sporting events. By listening to them and meeting them I was totally impressed. I think the group would also agree we were all impressed by the courage and spirit of one of their very own even more.

Lindsey Renfroe was like any other young person a few weeks ago. She was enjoying a vacation in Panama City, Florida. It was suppose to be a day of fun. She had rented one of the motor bikes young people like to rent to enjoy a day of traveling up and down the famous strip there.

In a split moment the incoming freshman from Lexington, Tennessee saw her world turn upside down. A drunk driver hit her at an intersection and as a result she suffered two broken fermur bones. The Nursing Major from Scotts Hill high school is learning to walk again. After a week in a Florida hospital she returned to her home in West Tennessee to continue her rehab.

I was encouraged by her spirit and smile. On a hot day when I was trying to manage the heat this young lady was all smiles and glad to join her future teammates. The heat I am sure was even tougher on her, but not once did she complain.

Her rehab will be tough for the next six to eight weeks but her goal is to still start school if possible and be there with her teammates when the Cats begin their different seasons. A huge part of the comeback will be helped by her family. Lindsay is the daughter of John and  Daphne Renfoe of Lexington. Her sisters, Hannah and Emma will be there to cheer her own as well.

Bethel University is proud of you Lindsay, and we all encourage you to keep fighting. We are inspired by your attitude and spirit.
