
MCKENZIE, Tenn. (January 19, 2008)-The Bethel College Lady Wildcats were defeated by the #5 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions, 57-69, in Saturday afternoon’s TranSouth contest. The Lady Wildcats tumble to 7-10 (2-4) as the Lady Lions improve to 16-2 (6-0) on the season.
The Bethel College Lady Wildcats jumped out to a four point lead in the opening minutes of the half. Freed-Hardeman quickly knotted the score at eight by the 15:00 mark. The Lady Wildcats continued to work it into the post, but the Lady Lions took the lead and held on to it. The Lady Wildcats made 12 of 31 shots from the field for 38.7% and went into the break down, 29-35.
The Lady Wildcats allowed Freed-Hardeman to score the first two points of the second stanza. Bethel came out of the break icy from the field as they connected on just 8 of 29 for the half. The Lady Wildcats found themselves down by as much as 16 points, but continued to work defensively, and cut the deficit to 11 with under 3:00 to play. Bethel committed 18 turnovers in the game while forcing the Lady Lions into 15. Bethel went to the charity stripe just 18 times in the contest, making 13, while Freed-Hardeman saw the free throw line 27 times connecting on 21 shots. For the game, the Lady Wildcats shot 33.3% from the field (20/60) and 28.6% from behind the arc (4/14). The Lady Wildcats took the loss, 57-69.
Four Lady Wildcats finished the game with double-digit scoring. Leading the way was Nina Djokovic (SO/Belgrade, Serbia) and Tristan Johnson (SO/Bolivar, TN) with 13 points each. Djokovic added 11 rebounds, one assist, and one steal making this her fifth double double of the season and third of this week. Johnson added three assists and one rebound. Junior Jelena Budimir (Belgrade, Serbia) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, four blocks, and two assists. Erin Meyer (SR/Memphis, TN) rounded out the top scorers with 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and one block.
The Lady Wildcats will host Cumberland University (Tenn.) next Saturday, January 26th at 2PM in Baker Fieldhouse at McKenzie, TN.
