MCKENZIE, TENN. (March 2, 2008) – Bethel College got off to a strong start with its three game TranSouth Conference opening series against Freed-Hardeman University taking the first game 13-3, but the Wildcats dropped the final two games, 7-9 and 6-10.
 

In game one, the ‘Cats got off quickly after Heath Sharp singled, Jonathan Keck set a 2-2 pitch to deep right center for a 2-0 lead. The Lions picked up two runs in the third, but Bethel countered with a sacrifice fly by Sharp that scored Johnathan Deberry. The Lions would tie the game in the fifth, but the ‘Cats would respond with two in the bottom half of the inning. Andrew Maddox hit a two- run single that put Bethel on top for good. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats plated eight runs to end the game by the 10-run rule. Two runs scored on an error and a wild pitch and with two on, Maddox hit a line drive three-run homer to right-center. Then Scott Dean drove in a run with a single and Seth Stanfil line a single to score the final run. Besides the offense, the Wildcats also got two good pitching performances from starter Blake Willis and Rhett Hughes. Willis went five innings allowing three earned runs on three hits and struck four in going 4-0 on the year. Hughes pitched the top of the sixth allowing only one hit. Offensively, Maddox was 3 for 4 with five RBI and one run scored. Sharp was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI; Keck was 1 for 1 with 2 RBI, 3 runs scored and 2 walks; Deberry was 1 for 3 with a RBI, 2 runs scored and a walk; Stanfil was 2 for 5 with a RBI and 2 runs scored; Dean was 1 for 2 with a run scored and a RBI.

In game two, the Wildcats again jumped on the score board with a run in the first inning. Sharp doubled to deep center allowing Stanfil who singled to score. The Lions finally got to Bethel starter Jonathan Keck, plating four runs in the fourth. But, Bethel responded in a big way down 1-4. In the bottom of the fourth the Wildcats scored six times and looked to be in control. Jim Evans singled to drive in Maddox who led the inning off with a single through short. He was followed by an opposite field homer by Jake Ramsey on the first pitch. With the bases loaded and one out, Keck doubled to clear the bases to plate three runs. But Bethel’s control of the game would end there as Freed got three runs off Jon Patterson in the top of the fifth, one run off Levi Scronce in the sixth and one more off Blake Talbott in the seventh as Bethel fell 7-9. Keck went four innings giving up four runs on five hits, walked two and struck out three. Patterson went one inning, allowing three runs on two hits. Scronce went one inning giving up a run on two hits and Talbott went one inning allowing a run on one hit.

In the finale, the Wildcats looked to take the series and once again worked with early runs. Sharp drove in Satnfil in the first and Craig Massey hit a sacrifice fly to score Sharp for a 2-0 first inning lead. Freed again would answer with one run in the second, three in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth. Then things got interesting as Bethel struck for four in the bottom of the sixth. Stanfil led off the inning with his first homer of the year, Sharp followed with a double and Keck followed that with one of the longest homers hit in Wildcat Park to deep center field. Maddox doubled to center and scored on an error as Bethel cut the score to 6-9. But Bethel was unable to score any more runs and Freed plated one additional run in the top of the ninth. David Rodriquez dropped his first decision of the year and is 3-1. He threw four innings allowing seven runs on nine hits. Chris Crenshaw pitched 4.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits. Hughes pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless ball.

The Wildcats will be on the road for a weekend conference match-up with Lyon College in Batesville, Ark. this coming weekend. The series starts on Friday, March 7, 2008 with first pitch at 1:00pm. The series continues on Saturday, March 8, 2008 with a double headed starting at 12:00pm. Then on Monday, March 10, 2008, they will travel to Florence, Ala. to play the University of North Alabama at 3:00pm.
