NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 24, 2008) – The #14 Bethel Lady Wildcats tennis team found themselves playing a familiar opponent as they took on the #12 Cumberland University Lady Bulldogs for the third time in just a little over two weeks. Cumberland defeated Bethel the previous two times in very close matches 4-5 and 3-5. Unfortunately, an injury to Lady Wildcat Karen Martinez helped contribute to the Lady Wildcats third straight loss to CU 2-5.

Before the matches even began, the Lady Wildcats found themselves trailing 0-2. Martinez had a severe ankle sprain that kept her competing. Therefore, Cumberland picked up default wins in her doubles match and her singles match. Cumberland took a 3-1 lead after the doubles matches as number one's Juliana Costa and Marcela Vita Santos lost 4-8; Dana Ledbetter and Marta Carolina Bello won 8-5. In singles, Bello lost 3-6, 4-6; Santos won 6-1, 6-1; and Ledbetter fell 1-6, 2-6.

The Lady Wildcats are 9-4 on the season. They will have to wait and see if they get a NAIA National Tournament invitation. The NAIA National Championships will be held in Mobile, Ala. and begins on Monday, May 12, 2008.
