Before Bethel took to the field on Monday night, ten Wildcats were recognized for the efforts on and off the field. Those earning All-Academic honors were: Patrick Aldrich, Chad Blanton, Will Cripps, Scott Dean, Rhett Hughes, Zach Tippitt and Josh Wharton. Heath Sharp for designated hitter and Jonathan Keck for utility player were named to the Second Team All-Conference. Freshman, Craig Massey, was named First Team All-Conference for shortstop.
In game one of the tournament, Bethel committed four errors and only produced three hits in the 3-13 loss to Trevecca Nazarene. The Trojans scored five runs in the first two innings and added two more in the fourth and Bethel trailed 0-7. It looked as though the Wildcats were going to get a shot in the arm as Jonathan Keck hit a ball two feet from the top of the fence at the 414 ft. sign. But, he had a stand up triple but wasn't held at third over-running the bag and was tagged out trying to return to the bag. Bethel got on the board in the top of the 5th as Johnathan Deberry walked with the bases loaded for a 1-7 score. Bethel picked up another run as Keck doubled to deep left-center, advanced to third on a wild throw and scored on Andrew Maddox's ground out to first. Bethel made it 3-7 in the top of the seventh as Deberry walked to load the bases and pitch runner Josh Wharton scored on a wild pitch. Then, it all unraveled beginning in the seventh as the Trojans plated one and then five more in the eighth. The Bethel loss wasn't without a standout pitching performance by senior Blake Willis. Willis went 7.1 innings, throwing 129 pitches in his final game for Bethel. The Trojans scored 12 runs, 9 earned against Willis, but he gutted out a tremendous effort and tried to give the Wildcats a chance.
It didn't go much better for the Wildcats on day two against the Martin Methodist RedHawks. Bethel got the first out, walked the next three batters to load the bases and then the RedHawk's Hector Lora rifled a shot to right-center that went all the way to the wall. Hector was able to make it all the way around the bases for the in-the park grand slam. Martin kept the pressure on chasing Bethel starter Chris Crenshaw after just 1.1 innings of work. Crenshaw was roughed up for six runs on only three hits. He was relieved by Blake Talbott who did a good job of keeping it manageable for the Wildcats. Talbott went 3.2 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits. Bethel plated a run in the bottom of the third as Heath Sharp hit a sacrifice fly that Will Cripps scored on. Keck was able to score for Bethel in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice, making the score 2-10. Then in the MMC half of the seventh inning, the RedHawks teed off on Bethel reliever Rhett Hughes scoring seven times to effectively put any chance Bethel had to rest. Bethel scored once more as Jay Lowery doubled and scored on a fielder's choice.
Bethel's season ends with a record of 31-17 (11-12).
