It’s the biggest rivalry game for the men’s soccer team. Only one hour separates the two schools that were TranSouth regular season and tournament champions last season. Mid-Continent University won the regular season and Bethel College defeat Mid-Continent for the tournament championship. This year, Bethel bested the Cougars 3-1 in their only regular season match-up.
Bethel got on the board first as senior, Sean Fraser worked past the remaining defender and got around the Cougar’s goalkeeper Nikola Samac and finished from the right hand side of the goal. Fraser is tied for the team lead in goals with seven this season.
The second half was a battle for thirty minutes until Armando Orozco took a feed from Mike Robertson down the right side of the field. Orozco, the TranSouth Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the last two weeks, made a move on the goaltender leaving him on the ground behind him and then made one more move on a defenseman trying to block the goal, before lightly depositing the ball in the left side of the goal. But, the Wildcats could not celebrate long as MCU’s Wayne McCarron scored just two minutes later for a 2-1 Bethel lead. Freshman, Ian Moore, put the game away on another assist by Mike Robertson. Moore’s second goal of the season gave Bethel a 3-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Bethel improved to 7-4 and 4-1 in the conference, which has four teams tied for first. The Wildcats will not be able to enjoy their win for long as they will be hosting Martin Methodist College in another conference tilt on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at 3:00pm.
