(MCKENZIE, Tenn., August 29, 2008) - The Bethel men's soccer team served notice that they plan on being a contender this season as they went to Azusa, California and tied the number one team in the NAIA pre-season poll 1-1 after double overtime. Azusa Pacific University is the defending national champion.

Bethel had Azusa's attention after the first half ended with a 0-0 tie. Then the Wildcats took the lead at 57:12 as Armando Orozco scored collecting a deflected cross for a touch to the near post that beat the Cougar's goaltender from 12 yards out. But, Azusa's Jared Karkas came up with the equalizer in the 77th minute. After a long throw-in from the right side, sophomore midfielder Ashkon Banihashemi dropped the ball back to the left to Karkas, who took a touch forward before blasting a low drive to the far post to beat Bethel goalkeeper Massimo Collu-Marchese.

Bethel did not make the challenge any easier as they played the closing minutes of regulation a man down following Orozco's second caution and automatic ejection in the 87th minute, and the Wildcats dropped to 9 players in the 106th minute when Erick Rosas was sent off with a red card. Azusa Pacific pressed forward with the 2-man advantage, and the Cougar's defender Beau Hayden had an open look inside the box, but his shot went wide of the goal in the closing seconds.

Collu-Marchese posted nine saves in the match. Bethel was outshot 20-13 on the afternoon but only 9-5 on goal.

The Wildcats will wrap up their California trip playing Westmont College (Cal.) on Saturday, August 30,2008.
