JACKSON, Tenn. (October 25, 2008) - The four year winning streak Bethel enjoyed over Lambuth University came to an end at L.L. Fonville Field with a 46-28 Eagle win. The Wildcats fell behind 20-0 in the first quarter and although they made a comeback bid, the defense wasn't able to stop the Eagles offensively allowing LU 571 yards of offense.

The first quarter will be one that the Wildcats will like to forget. Lambuth took the opening kickoff and scored on their third offensive play of the game with just 1:41 off the clock. LU would score on the next possession, a 13 play drive, for a 13-0 lead with 5:50 left in the quarter. On Bethel's following possession, running back David Brown put the ball on the turf on the first play from scrimmage giving the Eagles the ball back. Lambuth would take advantage and scored on eight plays to take a 20-0 lead with 2:53 left in the first quarter.

The second quarter was a turnaround point for the ‘Cats. Bethel's defense would come up with a crucial stop on fourth down at their own 28 and that seemed to spark the offense. Justin Woodard ripped off a 29 yard run to begin the drive. Facing fourth and ten from the Lambuth 30, the Eagles were flagged for pass interference. Then, facing fourth and two from the LU 17 yard line, Desmond Newbold took the direct snap in for the score. Sean Fraser booted the PAT and Bethel trailed 20-7. Lambuth would respond by scoring on the following possession for a 26-7 advantage. The Wildcats would get a lift before the half was complete. Starting from their own 20 yard line, the ‘Cats would engineer a 12 play drive that ended with fullback Steve Jarrett pounding it in from the three and Bethel cut the lead to 26-14 at the break.

Bethel would get a big play from Chad Lamping and Woodard, a 42 yard pass play to put the Wildcats at the LU 23. But, on the following play, Newbold took the snap and threw an interception that the Eagles would turn into points after a nine play drive. After stopping the Eagles to force a punt, Bethel got a good rush on the punter that resulted in a 21 yard punt and Bethel would start with a short field at the LU 36. Facing fourth and nine from the Eagle's 35, Lamping hit Will Cripps for a 15 yard gain. Two plays later, Lamping found Joevaris Carter for a fourteen yard touchdown and the Eagles lead was cut to 33-21.

The momentum seemed to be turning in the Wildcats favor as the fourth quarter began. Just 2:06 into the fourth, the ‘Cats got the big play they needed as Lamping found John Graham over the middle for a 50 yard catch and run. Bethel appeared to be on the verge of making a huge comeback, trailing 33-28 with plenty of time left in the game. Lambuth was driving, but the defense came up big as Chancey DePriest separated LU quarterback Josh Garza from the ball and Wade Vandergriff recovered at the Bethel 31 yards line. But, Bethel would return the favor, as Lamping was picked off and the Eagles returned it to the Wildcats 2 yard line, where they would score for a 39-28 lead. Bethel would drive to the LU 18 yard line, but failed on a fourth down incompletion. Lambuth's backup quarterback, freshman Adam Wiese, would find Shane Smith open for the final score of the day with 1:45 remaining.

For the fifth time this season, Woodard broke the century mark. Woodard was the work horse for the ‘Cats, carrying 34 times for 135 yards. Woodard also caught two balls for 60 yards. Lamping was 12 of 33 for 220 yards with two TDs and one INT. Carter had five catches for 64 yards and a touchdown. Graham had 2 grabs for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Johnathan Deberry and Will Henry each had seven tackles. Antonio Wardlow posted six stops. Sean McCormick, Wade Vandergriff and David Flatt each had five stops. James Barham added the lone sack of the afternoon.

Bethel falls to 3-5 (1-2) on the season. They will be off this coming weekend before traveling to Prattville, Ala. on Saturday, November 8, 2008 to play the Faulkner University Eagles. Game time is set for 7:00pm and can be heard on 97.7 FM and on-line at www.bethelathletics.com.
