Bethel's Stoney Burns Named West Defensive Player of Year

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Faulkner (Ala.) senior quarterback Josh Hollingsworth and Bethel (Tenn.) junior defensive back Stoney Burns are the Mid-South Conference West Division Players of the Year, conference officials announced on Wednesday.

Hollingsworth is the MSC West Offensive Player of the Year while Burns is the West Defensive Player of the Year.

The individual awards and the all-conference teams are selected by a vote of the division's coaches.

Four other individual awards were announced Wednesday as Reinhardt (Ga.) running back L.J. Stegall has been named the West Offensive Freshman of the Year and Cumberland (Tenn.) linebacker Nathan Jernigan is the West Defensive Freshman of the Year honor.

Cumberland's William Judson is the Mid-South Conference Football Champions of Character recipient. Judson was selected based on his academic and athletic achievement, campus and community leadership, future ambition and demonstration of five core character values of the NAIA.

Reinhardt coach Danny Cronic is the Ron Finley West Division Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers.

Hollingsworth led the Mid-South in six different offensive statistical categories this season including in total offense per game (375.4), passing yards per game (380) and touchdowns throws (40).

On a national scale, Hollingsworth is second in passing yards per game, total offense (4,129), total offense per game and total passing (4,180). He is third in passing efficiency (170.7).

During the season, Hollingsworth recorded four of the top five passing games in the Mid-South, including a season-high 554 yards in the Eagles' regular-season finale at Kentucky Christian. Over the last three weeks, Hollingsworth has thrown 15 touchdowns and just three interceptions.

Hollingsworth helped the No. 9-ranked Eagles to a 9-2 record and a share of the MSC West Division title and the program's first berth into the Football Championship Series. Faulkner travels to St. Francis (Ind.) in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Saturday.

Burns led the Mid-South and the NAIA this season with eight interceptions. He also led both the conference and the NAIA in interceptions per game at nearly one per contest.

Burns added 37 tackles during the season, including a sack and a tackle for a loss.

Stegall led the Mid-South in all-purpose yards per game (162) and tied for the conference lead with 17 touchdowns, including three during kickoff returns. Jernigan recorded 66 tackles during the season for the No. 23-ranked Bulldogs. He finished the 2013 season with eight tackles for a loss and one sack.

Cronic led the Eagles to a share of the West Division regular season title in the program's first season. Reinhardt -- who is receiving votes in the final regular season national poll -- posted a 6-4 overall record and 4-1 mark in the West Division.

Thirty-one players earned first team all-conference honors and 30 were selected second team all-conference as voted on by the coaches. Ties for all-conference teams were not broken.
