Bethel dominated the first half of their game with the Lady Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University. The Lady ‘Cats shot 54% in the opening frame with Lanicka Smith hitting 5 of 7, scoring 13 points in the first. Bethel was having their way in the post as Jelena Budamir also hit double digits with 12 points. And when they weren't getting offense from the inside, Anna Trull was providing it from the outside as she scored 10. Bethel also held a big advantage on the boards as they had 27 to HSSU's 14. The Lady Wildcats opened a double digit lead with Smith's basket at 3:15 for a 10 point advantage. Then, Bethel scored eight unanswered points to end the half with a 19-point advantage, 54-34.
BC continued to control the game in the second half as Coach Chris Nelson emptied the beach allowing every player to see some action. Harris-Stowe battled to get within 12, but that was a close as they would come. Bethel put the game away with a 10-0 run with 5:10 remaining for a 24 point lead.
Two Lady Wildcats posted double-doubles and four hit double digits in points. Budamir led the team with 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to go with three blocks. Teena Carter turned in her third straight solid game with 16 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Smith and Trull each dropped in 17 points. Milica Ivanovic grabbed 10 rebounds.
On Saturday, Bethel was handed its first loss of the season by the Lady Cavs of Walsh University. Walsh shot 61% in the first half to Bethel's 38%, but the Lady Wildcats only trailed by three, 41-38, at the break. The Lady Wildcats trailed by 11 with 3:49 left in the first and cut the lead to three with a 10-1 finish.
Bethel shot much better in the second half (54%), but when they took the lead they were unable to break away from the Lady Cavs. The score tittered back and forth with Bethel and Walsh each gaining the lead six times in the second half. The two teams also knotted the score up eight times in the second frame. Joanna Ortiz hit a three-ball with 0:33 remaining to cut the lead to two, 79-77. WU's Katie Berry hit both of her freebies with 0:23 left to take a four point lead. BC's Kashundria Berry hit both her free throws with 0:18 to cut Walsh's lead back to two, 81-79. But, Walsh's Katie Berry hit one of her free throws to close out the game, 82-79 Walsh.
Nina Djokovic had her highest scoring total of the year with 17 points. She added eight rebounds, two assists and one steal. Trull had 10 points with three steals. Budamir had nine points, five rebounds and two blocks. Meagan Price had eight points and three assists. Carter had seven points, four rebounds, one block and four steals.
The Lady Wildcats are 3-1 on the season. They will return to the floor on Friday, November 14, 2008 at 8:00pm as they host the Lady Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange College (Mo.). Then will be at home on Saturday, November 15, 2008 for a 3:00pm tip-off against the Lady Bearcats of Brescia University (Ky.).
