The Wildcats got their weekend of play off to a strong start in their match-up with Mid-South Conference member Union College. The Wildcats were hot out of the gate going on a 10-0 run to start the game. Bethel would go up by as many as 11 on Artomie Dixon's basket at 8:15. Union would battle back to cut the lead to five at the break. Bethel was led by Dontaye Hinton in the first half with 11 points and three steals. He was followed by Daniel Doyle with 10 points; Doyle was a perfect 5 for 5 from the floor.
After the Bulldogs hit a couple of freebies to open then second half and cut the Wildcats lead to only three, Bethel went on a 7-0 to open a 10-point advantage 39-29 at 18:03. Union would get as close as three again at 12:20, but Bethel went on three 7-0 runs to put the game out of reach. Brian French accomplished the first 7-0 run all on his own at 10:36. French dropped a three-ball, then hit a two and finished off the run by hitting both his free throws. Bethel's next 7-0 run began at 8:39 when Gavin McDaniel hit two freebies, followed by a French freebie, a McDaniel two and an Eddie King two. The Wildcats put the game completely out of reach with their final 7-0 run at 4:02. Doyle got it started with a two, then hit two free throws, Chris Walker dropped a two and Dane MacDonald hit one from the charity stripe.
It was a break out game for Doyle who posted his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Hinton had 13 points and three steals. French added 12 points. Antonie Lesesene had 10 points and seven boards. Brennen Ward paced the Wildcats in assists with six.
Bethel used the same formula in their game against Saint Catharine's College by stringing together runs. The two teams battled back and forth as they tied the score six times in the first 7:07 of the game. Then the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run at 12:53. McDaniel's two started the run, followed by Lesesene's, Hinton's and MacDonald's two. Then McDaniel finished what he started with another two ball to put Bethel up 24-14. SCC cut Bethel's lead back to five before the Wildcats scored 11 unanswered for a 35-20 lead.
Bethel's Lesesene was the work horse for the Wildcats in the second half, scoring 11 points in the second frame. Bethel would lead by as many as 24 before settling for 11-point, 79-68 win.
Lesesene led the Wildcats offense with 20 points and added seven rebounds. Hinton had 15 points, three assists and led the team with three steals. Ward had nine points and four assists. MacDonald had eight points, two assists and two steals.
Bethel is 3-0 on the young season. The Wildcats will be on the road to play Murray State University in an exhibition match-up on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at 7:30pm.
