Pulaski, Tenn. (November 15, 2008) - For the second time in three years, the Bethel College men's soccer team is the TranSouth Conference Tournament Champions. The Wildcats avenged a regular season loss to Martin Methodist College, but had to go all the way to do it. With the score tied 2-2 after double overtime, the game was decided on penalty kicks. Bethel notched 2 PKs to MMC's 1 PK to claim the win; Steven Short and Massimo Collu-Marchese scored the winners. With the win Bethel has qualified for their second ever NAIA National Tournament appearance.

Bethel as they has done late in the season scored an early goal to take control. Mario Vila Boa scored in the 19th minute to give Bethel the 1-0 lead. Bethel and goalkeeper Collu-Marchese held the RedHawks scoreless in the first half. Collu-Marchese had nine saves in the match.

Bethel took a commanding 2-0 lead in the 56th minute when Armondo Orozco scored on a penalty kick. That's when things turned for the worse for the Wildcats. MMC cut the lead to one when Fernando Barbeiro scored on an assist by Andrew Gordon in the 58th minute. One minute later Bethel's Omar Apodoca was given a red card to put Bethel down a man. Then in the 70th minute Bethel's Roan Brown was given a red card putting Bethel down two men. Playing two men down, Martin was able to notch their second goal to tie the game in the 77th minute. It got worse for the Wildcats as Orozco was given his second yellow card putting him out of the game. At this point, Bethel was playing 8 men against 11 men for the remainder of regulation and into the overtime. And if it could not have gotten worse, Eric Rosas received his second yellow card with 3:59 left in the second overtime to put Bethel down four men, 7 on 11. But, the Wildcats were able to hold on to force the game to penalty kicks.

Bethel enters into the 30 team field for the first round of the NAIA National Tournament set to begin on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Bethel has been awarded the first round game and will play against the Bruins of Bellevue University from Bellevue, Nebraska. The Bruins are 14-3-1 (4-0) on the season. If Bethel can win their first round game, they will join the other 14 winners and host school Fresno Pacific (Calif.), at the 50th Annual Men's Soccer National Championship from Dec. 1-6 in Fresno, Calif.
