MCKENZIE, Tenn. (November 22, 2008) - The Bethel Wildcats men's soccer team continued their dominance at home with a 3-0 shutout victory over the fifth seeded Bruins of Bellevue University (Neb.) in the NAIA National Tournament. It was Bethel's second ever appearance and their first NAIA Tournament win. The win propels the Wildcats to the second round at the National Tournament site in Fresno, Calf. They will play on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 4:00pm CST against twelfth seeded Southern Nazarene University (Okla.). Southern Nazarene defeated Lambuth University 2-1 to advance.

Bethel started the season playing against the pre-season #1 team, Azusa Pacific, taking them to a 2-2 tie. In the next nine games, Bethel would face three more teams either in the top 25 or receiving votes in the poll. The Wildcats had an adjustment period as they are a very young team with only one senior. They would go 4-5 in the next nine games as they learned how to play with one another. They haven't lost since, going 10-0 and outscoring their opponents 22-3.

In the biggest game of the year, the Wildcats shinned, showing off their speed and athleticism. It took a little bit, the play was physical and defense on both sides made it difficult for the offenses to muster any threats. But, in the 34th minute Mario Vila Boa streaked down the right side and got behind the defense to score the first goal for Bethel. Both teams only managed three shots each in the first half, with Bethel getting one and Bellevue putting two on goal.

Defensive play continued into the first part of the second half, but then both teams turned up the offensive intensity. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Felix Obilo took a pass from Vila Boa and blasted a shot from the top of the goalie box that found the top right hand side of the goal. Trailing 2-0 the Bruins had to start taking chances that left them exposed on the defensive end. With fifteen minutes remaining, Vila Boa struck again after getting a pass from Armando Orozco; Vila Boa with a Bruin defender hanging on him was able to get a sliding kick past the diving Bruins' goalkeeper Sebastian Narvaez. Bethel's goal keeper Massimo Collu-Marchese pitched the shutout win with four saves.

With the win, the Wildcats won their first NAIA National Tournament game. The reminder of the tournament will be held in Fresno, California. The Wildcats are one of sixteen teams in the hunt for the national title.
