PULASKI, Tenn. (04.29.09) - The Bethel Lady Wildcats got some timely fielding and hitting to take their first round game 4-1 over the Lady Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene University in the TranSouth Softball Tournament. Bethel turned three double plays during the game. With the victory, Bethel will play on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 1:00pm in Pulaski, Tenn. against the winner of #1 seeded Martin Methodist College or #8 Cumberland University.

The Lady Wildcats got an early lead with a run in the first. With one out, Lindsey Davis singled to left and scored on Brittany Edmonds double to deep left center.

TNU had one on with one out in the bottom of the second, but a double play turned by Whitney Taylor, Ashley Simmons and Blaire Johnson erased the threat. The Lady Trojans got two on with one out in the bottom half of the third, only to have the Lady ‘Cats turn another double play this time by Taylor and Johnson.

Bethel got some timely hitting in the fourth. With one out, Amanda Renfroe lined a single to right; Johnson walked. Kasey Winsett blasted a RBI double to deep right-center to score Renfroe and the Lady Wildcats led 2-0. Brooke Cary tired to squeeze bunt, but the shortstop made the throw to first to get Cary and Johnson was thrown out at the plate for a double play to end the inning.

Trevecca replaced starting pitcher Stephanie Fisher in the fifth and Bethel immediately went to work on Riley Mashburn who came on in relief. After getting the first out, Mashburn ran into trouble. Burlison single to right-center; L. Davis singled; Edmonds walked to load the bases; Simmons lined a single up the middle as Burlison and L. Davis scored for a 4-0 lead.

After a lead off double in the fifth, Leah Hensley came in to relieve Bethel starter Amber Metzger. Metzger scattered six hits; she did not walk a batter and induced two double plays in 4.0 innings. Hensley got two ground outs and a fly out to preserve the shutout. She hit a bump in the seventh with a lead off double followed by a single; a fielder's choice scored a run for TNU. Hensley got a Simmons and Johnson double play to end the game. Hensley allowed one earned run, struck out one and two hits.

L. Davis was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Simmons was 1 for 3 with two RBI. Edmonds was 1 for 3 with a RBI. Winsett was 1 for 3 with a RBI. Burlison was 1 for 4; Renfroe was 1 for 2 with a run a scored and a walk; Taylor was 1 for 3.

Bethel and Trevecca faced each other four times during the regular season; Bethel won the double header in McKenzie, Tenn. and Trevecca won the double header in Nashville, Tenn.
