PULASKI, Tenn. (04.30.09) - The Lady Wildcats facing the number one
seeded and number ten team in the nation, Lady RedHawks of Martin Methodist
College, pulled off a stunning 2-0 victory in the TranSouth Conference
Tournament. Bethel was defeated in all
three match-ups with Martin during the regular season. Martin was the highest nationally ranked team
Bethel has defeated since they played in the NAIA National Tournament in 2006
and beat #5 St. Gregory's (Okla.) 2-1. Lady
Wildcat pitcher, Leah Hensley picked up her 18th win of the year
with the victory.
In the fourth inning, Bethel got on the board as Brittany Edmonds
tripled to deep right. Her hit deflected
off the right fielder's glove and got past the center fielder allowing Edmonds
to touch all the bases for a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Bethel threatened as Kasey Winsett led off with a double
to deep left-center and advanced to third on the throw. Brooke Cary hit a bunt single but was caught
stealing second. Whitney Taylor grounded
out to third and Brittini Burlison grounded out to the pitcher ending the
inning.
But, Taylor would come through in the seventh with an insurance
run. With one out, Blaire Johnson
singled to right and Morgan Berry came in to run for Johnson. Winsett singled to right-center and Berry went
to third. Cary struck out swinging. With
two out, Taylor sent a single to right-center, scoring Berry for a 2-0 lead.
Hensley allowed only four hits in her seven innings. She walked three and struck out two. The Lady Wildcats did not commit any errors.
Bethel out hit the #10 Lady RedHawks 9-4. Edmonds was 1 for 3 with a run scored; Taylor
was 1 for 3 with a RBI; Ashley Simmons was 2 for 3;Winsett was 2 for 3;Amanda
Renfroe was 1 for 3; and Brooke Cary was 1 for 3.
Bethel continues in the winner's bracket and
will face Freed-Hardeman at 1:00pm on Friday, May 1, 2009. The winner will advance to the championship
game, where one win will take the conference title. The loser will play either Union or Martin at
3:00pm. The winner of the 3:00pm game
will advance to the championship game and will have to win two games to claim
the tournament championship. Bethel and
Freed have faced each other in one double header in Henderson, Tenn. this season
and the teams split the twin-bill. Bethel
won game one 4-3 and Freed won game two 5-2.
