Decatur, Ala. (05.15.05) - The Lady Wildcats drew one of the toughest draws at the NAIA Softball Championship as they played their second straight top ten team. Bethel tied and then took a 2-1 lead in the fifth but the tenth ranked Clan from Simon Fraser University (B.C.) retied the game in the sixth and scored four runs in the eighth inning to take the win 6-2. Simon Fraser, much like Bethel's previous day opponent Oklahoma City, is a nationally ranked offensive power ranked #18 in the nation in runs scored.
Leah Hensley kept the game within Bethel's grasp for 7.1 innings, but on a hot humid afternoon tired giving up a bases loaded triple to Haley Cicchetti in the eighth; Cicchetti would score on a wild throw to third giving The Clan a 6-2 lead. Hensley allowed six runs, only four earned on eight hits, four walks and three strike outs. Amber Metzger came in and got a strike out and Brittany Edmonds threw behind the runner at first and got the out in a run down, closing out the inning.
Simon Fraser struck first in the second inning. With two outs, The Clan's Stefani Durrant singled to left, Cicchetti singled to right as Durrant moved to third. An uncharacteristic passed ball by Edmonds, Durrant scored for a 1-0 lead. Cicchetti moved to third, but Hensley got Collicutt to ground out to second to end the inning.
The Lady ‘Cats responded in the bottom half of the second to tie the score 1-1. With one out, Amanda Renfroe walked; Blaire Johnson struck out; with two gone, Kasey Winsett singled to left-center, Renfroe sprinted to third. Whitney Taylor was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brooke Cary hit a bullet right back at the pitcher who got a glove on but slowed it down and deflected to short allowing Renfroe to score. Brittni Burlison blasted a line drive that was caught at third to end the inning.
Bethel would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth. With one out Burlison grounded to second but beat out the throw for a single and then stole second. Lindsey Davis walked. Edmonds popped out. Ashley Simmons grounded to short but hustled down the line forcing a bad throw. Burlison scored on the error, Davis made it to third and Simmons was safe at first. Renfroe reached on a walk to load the bases, but Johnson struck out to end the threat.
The lead would be short lived as The Clan would knot the score in the top of the sixth. Jesse Harris reached base on Renfroe's errant throw. Chrissy Caviglia walked; Meaghan Cumpstone attempted a bunt sacrifice that was good enough no throw was made loading the bases with no outs. Marice Bruder singled to right driving in Harris. With the bases loaded and still no one out, Christine Barr lined out to Renfroe who tossed to Simmons covering third for a double play. Hensley forced Durrant to ground out, ending the inning.
Then, in the eighth, The Clan proved why they have won three previous National Titles getting a clutch hit at the right time. Cumpstone led off with a walk. Bruder singled; Barr grounded out to Hensley moving Cumpstone to third and Bruder to second. Durrant walked to load the bases. Cicchetti tripled to deep right-center, Cumpstone scored, Ribeiro scored, Durrant scored, then Cicchetti scored, on a bad throw to third. Leah Riske walked and that would end the afternoon for Hensley. Metzger came in and struck out the first batter she faced and Edmonds threw behind Riske at first and she was out in a run down to close the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Johnson singled with two outs, but that is all that the Lady Wildcats could muster.
Bethel falls to 33-14 on the year. The Lady Wildcats will take on the Lady Tigers of Georgetown College (Ky.). The Lady Tigers qualified by claiming the Mid-South Conference Championship. The game is set for 3:00pm on field number four.
