MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The No. 14 Bethel Lady Wildcats head to Martin Methodist Thursday night for a SSAC showdown against the Lady RedHawks. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
Match-up: The Lady Wildcats are 19-7 overall and 15-1 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. They have won nine straight games. Their last loss was to Martin Methodist back on January 12 in Crisp Arena. It was the only loss ever in the building to an SSAC opponent. Martin Methodist is No. 25 in the poll and has won seven straight. The RedHawks are 20-6 and 14-2. Martin Methodist is 11-2 at home this season while Bethel is 7-2 on the road.
Coaches: Chris Nelson is in his 11th season as the head coach of the Lady Wildcats. With a 235- 117 career mark he is the all-time wins leader with the women's program at the school. Kyle Bent is the head coach of the Hawks and is 133-83 at the school.
Last Game: – The Lady Wildcats were able to stave off a challenge by the Golden Tigers of Brenau University Saturday afternoon winning 70-61. An electric crowd in Crisp Arena saw the Lady Cats win their eighth straight game and thirteenth of their last 14. Bethel moved to 19-7 and 15-1 in the SSAC. They are 76 -9 all-time in Crisp Arena and 35-1 against SSAC opponents in the building. Bethel has won 49 of their last 52 regular season games against conference opponents. Brenau dropped to 14-9 and 7-8.
Bethel led at the half 31-26 and outscored the Golden Tigers 39-35 in the second half. Bethel was 23-of-59 from the field for 39 percent. They hit six three's and connected on 18-of-23 free throw attempts. Brenan was 21-of-62 from the floor for 33 percent. The Golden Tigers hit four three's and hit 15-of-19 charity tosses. Bethel had a 44-31 advantage in rebounding.
Brandi Goodman led Bethel with 22 points. She completed her double-double with 11 rebounds. Morgan Martin, despite foul trouble finished with 12 points. Mariah McKenty had a game tying 11 rebounds. Dominque Patrick came off the Brenau bench to lead all scorers with 28 points.
Martin Methodist is coming off a 70-68 win over Middle Georgia State. The RedHawks finished with four of five starters in double figures.
Brooklyn Blanchard (22) and Teairra Luckett (13) joined Kyoko Wade (14 points, 17 rebounds) while Jemia Carpenter (12 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 blocks) completed the four in double figures.
Blanchard's 22 points led all scorers in the contest.
SERIES: It will be the 26th meeting in the series with Bethel holding an 18-7 advantage. The Lady Wildcats are 10-1 in McKenzie and 5-5 in Pulaski. MMC beat Bethel earlier this season in Crisp Arena 64-62. It was Bethel's first loss ever against an SSAC opponent in the building. The Lady Wildcats are 35-1 in the arena against conference opponents.
