MONTGOMERY, Ala. –The Bethel Wildcats had to wait almost seven hours for their game to begin against Loyola Thursday in day two of the SSAC Championships in Montgomery and in the end it was a case of what might have been. The Wildcats looked to be in good shape leading 8-2 in the seventh but Loyola staged a huge comeback and ended Bethel's season by beating the Wildcats 9-8.
Action was delayed several times due to inclement weather in the Montgomery area. With the win the Pack remained alive and will meet the loser of the Middle Georgia/Mobile game Friday at 7 p.m.
Kendall Adkisson tripled in the first and later scored on a Gabriel Matias sacrifice fly to give Bethel a 1-0 lead.
Loyola's Ben Condara slugged a homer in the second to tie the game.
Bethel put four runs on the board in the third to grab a 5-1 lead. Matias had a RBI single. Christian Padin drove in a run with a double. Bradley Gill and Colby Poston each drove in a run in the inning for the Cats.
After Loyola scored a run in the fourth the Wildcats struck again on an RBI by Poston in the fifth to give the Wildcats a 6-2 lead.
Clayton Parker drove in two runs in the seventh to up the lead to 8-2.
The Pack battled back with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Wildcat lead to 8-5. Loyola sent nine men to the plate in the eighth and scored four runs to grab a 9-8 lead.
Bethel was able to get the tying run in scoring position in the ninth but failed to rally to win.
Bethel outhit Loyola 14-12 but left 12 runners on base in the game.
Axle Metzger suffered the loss while Jason Roussel picked up the win for Loyola.
Loyola snapped an eight game losing streak and improved to 22-33 on the year. Bethel ended their season at 27-22.
