JACKSON, Miss. (09.26.09) - The Bethel Wildcats led in eight different offensive categories but not where it counted in a 21-13 loss to the Blazers of Belhaven College. The loss drops Bethel to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in the Mid-South Conference West Division. One area that plagued the Wildcats was turnovers as Bethel committed three fumbles and two interceptions. Bethel running back Josh Boyd had his best rushing performance as a Wildcat with 140 yards on 28 carries.
Bethel had a total of 26 first downs to Belhaven's 11. Bethel outgained Belhaven 276-264 and held an advantage in total plays 85-54. Bethel held the ball for 35:16 to Belhaven's 24:44. The Wildcats converted 8 of 17 third downs to 3 of 12 for the Blazers and was 1 of 2 on fourth against 0 for 1. Bethel also held the edge in red zone chances going 3 for 4 against 1 of 1.
The first quarter went quietly as both teams seemed tentative. But, as the second frame began, Bethel was on the move. After their 11 play drive stalled, Sean Fraser booted a 24-yard field goal to give Bethel a 3-0 lead with 11:59 remaining in the second quarter. But, the Blazers Ricardo Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 62 yards to the Bethel 36 yard line. Belhaven would need three plays to score a 7-yard touchdown and take a 7-3 lead that would stay the same until halftime.
With 9:15 left in the third quarter Belhaven's punt hit a Bethel player and the Blazers recovered the loose ball. Two plays later and the Blazers' quarterback, Alex Williams found wide receiver Cordario Calvin for a 35 yard touchdown and Belhaven led 14-3 with 8:07 remaining in the third quarter. Bethel was driving into Blazer territory and facing third and 19, Troy Watson threw an interception that was returned to the Bethel 48 yard line. Belhaven need just five plays to cover the 48 yards and in so doing took a 21-3 lead.
As the final fame started Bethel was again on the march, grinding it out on the ground. Josh Boyd capped off an eleven play drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge and Bethel cut the lead to 21-10 with 10:40 left. The Wildcats defense came through forcing Belhaven to a three-and-out. Bethel was again on the move, driving to the Blazers 19 yard line. As the drive stalled, the Wildcats lined up for a field goal attempt but , the hold was mishandled and Luke Roth pulled up for a pass that fell incomplete. The Bethel defense again shut down Belhaven forcing another three-and-out. But, Bethel quarterback Troy Watson was picked off on the first offensive play. However, the Wildcats defense stiffened once again forcing the Blazers to punt. Starting on their four yard line, the Wildcats covered 86 yards in 12 plays ending in a Fraser 27 yard field goal getting Bethel within 8 points, 21-13 with :10 left. The Wildcats attempted an on-sides kick but was unable to recover.
Offensively, Josh Boyd led the way with 171 all-purpose yards with 140 rushing yards on 28 carries and a touchdown. Cordarius Mann had 51 yards on 11 touches. Passing, Troy Watson was 14-29 for 153 yards with two interceptions. Mann led the receiving corps with 4 grabs for 34 yards. Boyd had 2 catches for 31 yards; John Graham had 2 for 22 yards; Byron Boyd had 2 for 14 yards; Justin Rogers 1 for 18 yards; Justin Brandy 1 for 17; Nathan Fun 1 for 11 and Jahron Reynolds 1 for 6.
Defensively, Chancy DePriest had 9 tackles, with 1.5 for loss; BJ Banks 7 stops and a sack; Wade Vandergriff had 6 tackles, 15. For loss and a sack; Alex Hayes 6 tackles and a pass break up; and William Henry 5 stops, 1 for loss, and a sack.
Bethel will play their 2009 home opener this coming Saturday, October 3 beginning at 6:30pm. Bethel will continue Mid-South Conference West Divisional play against the Bulldogs of Cumberland University (Tenn.). Last season, the Wildcats lost to Cumberland 44-16 in Lebanon, Tenn.
