MONTGOMERY, W.V. (10.17.09) - It was drizzling and cold, but the Wildcats were on fire in West Virginia as the Bethel Wildcats saw it all come together for the first time this season defeating the West Virginia University Institute of Technology Golden Bears 63-28. The defense caused nine turnovers, the offense scored in the air and on the ground and special teams turned in a score in the win.

The game didn't start off well for the Wildcats in the first quarter as their second possession ended with a fumble on the WVT nine yard line that Michael Peeples returned 89 yards for a touchdown. But Bethel' DeMario Carter returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to the WVT 53. Four plays later, Josh Boyd found the endzone from five yards out to tie the score at 7-7. After an interception, the Golden Bears threatened on the Bethel 17 yard line, but William Henry picked off WVT's Michael Scott's pass in the endzone ending the threat.

As the second quarter started, Henry forced a fumble that Stayce Whipple recovered at the WVT 2 yard line. One play later, Josh Boyd scored to give Bethel a 14-7 lead. Bethel's defense held forcing a punt. The ‘Cats John Graham fielded the short punt at the WVT 48 and covered the distance as Bethel went up 21-7. The defense kept the pressure on WVT's first play when Steve Small intercepted a pass at the Golden Bears 32. The Wildcats quarterback, Troy Watson, found Justin Brandy open for a 34 yard touchdown strike. It was déjà vu on the next offensive possession when Watson hooked up with Brandy for another 34 yard touchdown, and Bethel led 35-7. WVT threatened again on the Bethel nine yard line, but Wade Vandergriff forced a fumble that Henry recovered at the 15 yard line. The Golden Bears would get on the board before the half when punter Luke Roth had the snap fly over his head giving the ball to WVT on the BU 19. The Golden Bears scored on their first play for a 35-14 Bethel advantage.

WVT started the second half with a successful on-sides kick, but their drive ended with Whipple's interception at the Bethel 12; Whipple returned the ball 63 yards to the WVT 25. The Wildcat drive stalled and Sean Fraser's field goal attempt from 38 yards out missed wide left. WVT drove to the Bethel 16 yard line, but the Wildcats defense turned them away again with Antonio Wardlow's pick in the endzone. Wardlow returned the ball 58 yards but fumbled the ball back to the Golden Bears. WVT marched back into Bethel territory and the Wildcat defense was opportunistic again. Vernard Williams forced a fumble that Chancy DePriest picked up at the six yard line and returned it 94 yards and a score. That put Bethel up 42-14. Four plays into the next drive, WVT scored on a 51 yard pass and catch. Back came the Wildcats again as Jahron Reynolds returned the kickoff 41 yards to the Golden Bears 25 yard line. Three plays and Boyd scored from 14 yards out. Up 49-14, the Wildcat defense wasn't finished; Whipple recovered a fumble at the Bethel 24 and the offense was on the move as the third quarter came to an end.

Graham nearly scored again on a punt return, but was stopped at the WVT 8. One play later and Cordarius Mann scored giving Bethel a 56-21 lead. The Golden Bears scored on their following possession for a 56-18 score. On second and nine from the Bethel 37, Carter burst through the WVT defense for a 56 yard scamper to the Golden Bears 7 yard line. He would score on the next play to give Bethel a 63-28 lead.

Defensively, Chase Horton led the Wildcats with nine tackles. Wardlow had eight stops with an interception. Sean McCormick had five tackles with two tackles for loss. DePriest has five tackles, one tackle for loss, a fumble recovery and return for touchdown, a forced fumble and a sack.

Troy Watson was 8 of 16 passing for 136 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Will Masoud was 2 of 4 for 32 yards. Brandy had three catches for 84 yards and two touchdowns. Graham had three catches for 27 yards.
