JACKSON, Tenn. (10.22.09) - The Bethel women's soccer team lost for the first time in ever to the Lady Bulldogs of Union University, 1-0. This marked the first win over Bethel in seven matches, spanning the five-year history of the Union women's soccer program.
It was another messy night for soccer and the wet conditions slowed play down for both teams. But, Union made one of their two first half shots count as Eboni Murphy scored with an assist from Jill Landers in the 43rd minute.
Union held off several Bethel scoring threats in the second half to hold on for the win. Bethel outshot Union 8-0 in the second half, 14-2 in the match, and 7-2 in shots-on-goal. Union's Laura Pla recorded seven saves in the match including a one-handed save inside ten minutes remaining to help secure the shutout.
Bethel's Jackie Gardner recorded a save in her 90 minutes of work between the posts. Maryse Beauregard and Marika Fukuta led Bethel with four and three shots respectively.
Bethel falls to 3-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in league play. The Lady Wildcats will be in Rome, Ga. on Saturday, October 24, 2009 to play Shorter College at 1:00pm.
