MCKENZIE, Tenn. (10.24.09) - It was an incredible effort by the Bethel Wildcats in their Homecoming matchup with #6 Lambuth University that will go down as an instant classic. For the over 4,000 in attendance, the game was extremely entertaining. Lambuth kicked a 32-yard field goal to tie the game with 30 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. Bethel took the lead twice on field goals in the first and third overtime, but Lambuth tied the game in the first and won it 19-16 with a one-yard touchdown in the third extra frame.
It was a game that the sixth ranked Eagles were supposed to run away with. Lambuth was undefeated coming into the game and averaging 43 points a game. The Bethel defense was outstanding limiting the high powered offense to just 19 points through three overtimes. The defense created five turnovers and special teams blocked Lambuth's first punt attempt. But, the offense was only able to capitalize on one turnover when they scored a go ahead touchdown with 5:29 remaining.
The game started just as Bethel would have wanted but it didn't last. As the defense held the Eagles on the first possession of the game, Antonio Wardlow blocked and recovered the Eagles punt on the Lambuth 25-yard line. But, the great start was short lived as Bethel took themselves right out of a scoring opportunity. First, a false start penalty, then a mishandled shotgun snap and another false start penalty saw the Wildcats come away with no points. Lambuth drove to the Bethel 15-yard line, but Chancy DePriest picked off Lambuth's David Hawkins at the one yard line. Bethel got into Lambuth territory, but Sean Fraser's 46-yard field goal attempt went wide right. Lambuth would take the lead on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Martin to Jefferson Rodrick for a 7-0 lead.
Bethel would get on the board as Fraser booted a 45-yard field goal with 6:22 left in the first half. Lambuth would drive into Bethel territory again, but the defense forced and recovered a fumble.
Lambuth was again threatening in the third quarter, but BJ Banks picked off Adam Wiese at the Bethel 44. The offense wasn't able to do anything after the turnover and Lambuth drove to the Bethel 7-yard line as the third frame came to a close.
As the fourth quarter began, Bethel's defense stiffened and forced a field goal attempt that Nathan O'Jibway missed from 23-yards out. Troy Watson's pass was intercepted by Lambuth giving the Eagles the ball on Bethel's 33-yard line. Lambuth's drive ended as the Wildcats defense forced a fumble. Bethel went three-and-out, but Gregory Hines recovered a fumble on Lambuth's first offensive play giving the Wildcats the ball on the Eagles 39-yard line. On third and one from the Lambuth one yard line, Watson snuck it in the endzone for the score giving Bethel their first lead of the game 10-7 with 5:29 left in the game. That sent the Homecoing crowd into a frenzy. The defense came up big holding Lambuth to another three and out. It appeared Bethel was poised to possibly make a score or run time off the clock. Watson completed a second down pass to Cordarius Mann for 41 yards to the Lambuth 41with under 5:00 to play. But, Josh Boyd was stripped of the ball trying to get extra yardage giving Lambuth the ball on their 32-yard line with 2:34 left. The Eagles methodically worked down the field allowing O'Jibway to kick a 32-yard field goal to knot the score up and send the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, Mann got 11 yards on the first play, but the drive stalled at the Lambuth 12. Fraser kicked the 29-yard field goal to put Bethel up 13-10. Lambuth gained zero yards on their possession and O'Jibway booted a 42-yard field goal to tie the game 13-13.
In the second overtime, O'Jibway missed his field goal attempt. Fraser had a chance to win the game for the Wildcats, but his 38-yard attempt missed sending the game into the third overtime.
In the third overtime, Fraser came back with a 25-yard field goal to give Bethel a 16-13 lead after the first possession. For the first time, the Bethel defense couldn't come up big as the Eagles' Martin jumped over the Bethel defensive line for a 1-yard touchdown and the 19-16 win.
Defensively, BJ Banks led the Wildcats with 13 tackles and an interception. Wade Vandergriff had 9 stops. Sean McCormick added sevens tops and one for a loss. DePriest had seven tackles and an interception. Antonio Wardlow had five tackles and a blocked punt.
On offense, Josh Boyd eclipsed the 100 yard mark for the fourth time this season with 104 yards on 33 carries and has 836 yards on the season. Mann had 27 yards on 11 carries but led the receiving corps with 81 yards on three catches. Watson was 10 of 19 for 168 yards and one interception through the air. Jahron Reynolds had three catches for 38 yards. Michael Thrasher had 2 grabs for 17 yards. Justin Rogers had one catch for 22 yards.
On special teams, Luke Roth punted 8 times for an average of 36.9 yards. But more importantly, Roth pinned 5 of his 8 punts inside the 20-yard line.
Bethel falls to 2-6 (1-2) on the season. They will be looking to give fans a treat on Halloween, October 31, 2009 at 7:00pm as they host Kentucky Christian University. Kentucky Christian is 1-7 on the year. The Knights won their first-ever Mid-South Conference game with a 22-14 victory over Faulkner University this past Saturday.
