LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. (10.20.09) - The Bethel University Women's Golf Team captured their fourth victory of the fall season Tuesday October 20th by shooting a 36-hole score of (330-341) 671; bettering host Martin Methodist College by 83 strokes in the Redhawk Classic contested at Lawrenceburg Country Club in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.
The event was played within rifle range of Tennessee hero Davy Crockett's birthplace and in Monday's first round the Lady Wildcats displayed shot-making prowess that would have made the legendary frontiersman envious. Junior Emily Muse of Paris led the field with a first-round four over par 75, her personal collegiate low round. Baillie Johnson, a sophomore from Pickwick, shot 80 to hold second place. Senior Haley Williams of Trenton carded an 86 for third place after day one of the tourney. Bethel's Kelsey Schwartz, a freshman from Bartlett, shot a personal best 89 and tied for fifth to round out Bethel's team scoring on day one. Freshman Jessica Maness of Lexington shot 90 and was in eighth place. Freshman Malorie James of Gleason (playing as an individual) shot 99 and was tied for eleventh in the fourteen woman field.
Leading by forty-nine strokes heading into day two of the tournament the Bethel women found improvement elusive for the most part. Emily Muse shot 83 to claim the individual championship as teammate Baillie Johnson could shave but one stoke from Muse's five stroke lead by carding an 82. Jessica Maness did improve seven strokes by shooting an 83. Ms. Maness was able to move from eighth place to fourth place and claimed the Lady Wildcats third All-Tournament award for the event. Haley Williams carded a 93 on day two and finished solo sixth, while Kelsey Schwartz shot 95 and tied for seventh. Malorie James shot 100 on day two and tied for twelfth.
Bethel's two-day score of 671 set a school record for the lowest thirty-six hole score in the history of the program.
