MCKENZIE, Tenn. (11.07.09) - The Bethel Wildcats got a strong defensive effort, threw the ball well, a running back eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the fifth straight year and Sean Fraser established a new field goal record in a 48-6 win over the visiting Eagles of Faulkner University. With Shorter College handing Belhaven their second loss in the Mid-South Conference West Division and Lambuth's forfeit to Bethel, the Wildcats control their own destiny. With a win this Saturday at Shorter, the Wildcats would capture their third Mid-South Conference West Division title and a secure a winning record.
 

Before the game started, 16 seniors were honored for their contributions to the football program. The seniors were: Dominique Davis, BJ Banks, Antonio Wardlow, Chancy DePriest, James Barham, Desmond Zollicoffer, Sean McCormick, Xavier Keys, Travis Sylver, Hunter Flippo, Paul Frazier, Luke Roth, Michael Thrasher, Sean Fraser, Gregory Hines and student assistant Patrick Griffith.

Bethel got off to a fast start as senior Antonio Wardlow intercepted Faulkner's Joe Scott and returned it 44 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Troy Watson found Dominique Macon on a 16 yard touchdown pass at the end of the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.

Watson continued to succeed through the air in the second quarter, this time finding senior tight end Michael Thrasher on a 12 yard aerial with 5:59 left in the half and the Wildcats led 21-0. Senior Sean Fraser kicked his first field goal of the evening from 36 yards out and Bethel carried a 24-0 lead to the locker room at halftime.

Faulkner capitalized on an interception with a touchdown early in the third quarter, but the PAT failed.

Bethel scored 24 unanswered in the fourth quarter and it began with a 53 yard strike from Watson to a wide open John Graham. With the wind at his back, Fraser set up for a 53 yard field goal that cleared true with plenty of extra to spare. Fraser's kick set a new Bethel mark for the longest field goal in the programs history. With Faulkner pressed to hurry the offense the defense again took advantage. Senior Chancy DePriest stepped in front of a Scott pass and took it back for a 22 yard touchdown. Late in the game, DeMario Carter took the handoff and ran nine yards for the final score.

As a team Bethel out gained Faulkner 375-192.

Josh Boyd ran 16 times for 71 yards giving him 1,027 on the season. He is ranked number eight in the nation with one game remaining. It is the eighth time that Bethel has had a 1,000 yard rusher in a season and his total is good for seventh on the list. Cordarius Mann ran 9 times for 52 yards. Watson was 14 of 24 for 225 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. John Graham had three catches for 66 yards and a score. Justin Brandy had three grabs for 52 yards and Jahron Jefferies had thee for 51 yards.

Wade Vandergriff led the defense with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Alex Hayes had six stops and 1.5 for loss. DePriest had five tackles and an interception return for a touchdown. Greg Hines, James Barham and Chris Sipes each had four stops.

The Wildcats even their record to 5-5 (4-1) on the season. Bethel travels to Rome, Ga. to play the Hawks of Shorter College in the season finale this coming Saturday, November 14, 2009 at 12:30pm.
