MCKENZIE, Tenn. (11.21.09) - The Bethel University men's soccer team will be going back to the NAIA National Tournament site in Fresno, Calif. after their 3-1 first round NAIA National Tournament win over the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan University. The Wildcats return to Fresno one year after capturing the school's first ever national championship in any sport.
Bethel dominated play right from the start and scored in the 15th minute. Emil Dorgeloh's pass was back-heel kicked by Armando Orozco past KWU's goalkeeper Diego Millan. Bethel had two more quality chances but could not convert as they outshot the Coyotes 5-1 in the first half. Play was somewhat tough in the first with 10 total fouls, but that would carry over into a very tense and physical second half.
Bethel's offense continued to press the issue in the second half. BU's Cade Parton blasted a shot outside the box that hit the cross bar before diving into the net in the 51st minute for a 2-0 lead. Orozco scored his second of the game in the 69th minute to give the Wildcats a 3-0 advantage. But, Bethel was unable to secure the shutout as the NAIA's leading scorer Arturo Guizar got the ball past Bethel goalkeeper Massimo Collu-Marchese in the 75th minute.
It was a physical game with tempers flaring often. The Coyotes were given four yellow cards and a red card. Bethel was charged with two yellow cards. In the second half, Bethel committed 10 fouls to KWU's 7. Offensively, the Wildcats held a 12-2 shooting advantage for the game.
Bethel improves to 15-1-3 on the year. Bethel will face Simon Fraser (B.C.) on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 11:30am in Fresno, Calf. the site of the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship. Simon Fraser is 17-3 on the year and defeated Warner Pacific (Ore.) 1-0 to advance to the second round.
