MCKENZIE, Tenn. (11.25.09) - The Bethel men's soccer team will be leaving for Fresno, Calf. early Saturday, November 28, 2009 to begin defense of their 2008 NAIA National Championship. Bethel will be facing the Clan of Simon Fraser University on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 1:30pm CST. The game will be shown via live video webcast in the Bethel University Grill in the Student Center free of charge.
 

Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a public university in British Columbia, Canada with its main campus on Burnaby Mountain in Burnaby, and satellite campuses in Vancouver and Surrey. It was established in 1965 and presently has more than 32,000 students and 900 faculty members. The university was named after Simon Fraser, a North West Company fur trader and explorer. On July 10, 2009, the NCAA announced that it had accepted SFU as a Division II member that will begin after a two year transition period. SFU will compete in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. They are the first Canadian university to be accepted as a member of the NCAA at any level.

The Clan has a history in the NAIA National Tournament winning three titles ('76, '82 and '83). This season they hold a record of 18-3-0, winning their last seven straight. Against ranked opponents this season, the Clan lost to #14 Azusa Pacific University 1-2; defeated #RV Warner Pacific University 1-0 and 6-1; and was victorious over #RV Concordia California 3-0.

Individually Simon Fraser has one player to score 10 or more goals; Alex Hanne netted 10 goals and assisted on six for 26 points. Colin Streckmann and Roman Doutkevitch each scored eight, the next highest was two tied with four. Bethel had three players scoring more than 10 goals; Mario Vila Boa scored 13 and assisted on 12 for 38 points; Vila Boa ranks #10 in the nation in total assists, #13 in assists per game, #16 in total points and #24 in points per game. Dawyne Smith scored 12 goals and assisted on 9 others; Smith ranks #26 in Assists per game, #28 in total assists, #33 in points per game and #34 in total points. Armando Orozco was the third Wildcat with 10 or more goals with 11 on the season. Andres Mejia netted eight and Samsideen Singateh scored seven.

In net for the Clan is Hide Ozawa. He has started 15 games giving up 9 goals; his goals against average is 0.61 and has posted six shutouts. For Bethel, Massimo Collu-Marchese has started 19 games and allowed 11 goals; his goals against average is 0.55 and has also posted six shutouts.

The winner of the game will face either the host school Fresno Pacific University or Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Fla.) on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 1:30pm CST.
