MCKENZIE, Tenn. (12.22.09) - Baseball in December its when players get better putting in the extra time. For about 45 participants the two day camp gave them a head start on the upcoming spring season. Bethel University Athletic Director Glenn Hayes was the director of the camp that included instruction from Vanderbilt Pitching Coach Derek Johnson, Mike Minor (the number seven overall pick in the 2009 MLB draft by the Atlanta Braves), current Vanderbilt pitchers Drew Hayes, Taylor Hill, Mark Lamm and catcher Drew Fann.

"It was a great turnout, our attendance is up over last year," said Glenn Hayes. "From Coach Johnson to all the players that came to work the camp, they all asked to come and wanted to be here. I think it is nice to have them come to us, to McKenzie and want to come. The guys have a passion for teaching and getting to know the kids; to help them get better. I also think the instructors benefit too, because they go back to some of the basics and remember some things that they may gotten away from."

Camp participants were shown proper stretching and arm control techniques. Coach Johnson also stressed the importantance of playing catch. Different drills and techniques were also shown so that the campers could continue to improve their skills.

The weather even cooperated on day two of the camp allowing time on the field at Wildcat Park. All campers received a t-shirt, autograph and photo opportunities.

Plans are being made to have the camp again in 2010. Specific details should be coming in mid-October 2010.
