MCKENZIE, Tenn. (02.19.10) - The Bethel Wildcats baseball season got off to a positive start with two wins squeezed around a tie with a talented Olivet Nazarene University Tiger team. Bethel took game one, 3-1, tied game two 10-10 and won the finale 8-5.
Game One
Bethel got a strong start on the mound from Colby Fitzpatrick who gave up one hit and one unearned run in five innings of work. Fitzpatrick had great command striking out seven and walking none. Derek Hinson threw a scoreless inning and Dustin Blakney tossed a scoreless seventh picking up the save. The one hit off Fitzpatrick was the lone hit for the Tigers.
The offense pounded out nine hits and took advantage of five Tigers' errors. After ONU scored an unearned run in the top of the second, Bethel responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Jake Ramsey led off with a single and scored on an error as Billy Keck reached on an error.
Bethel plated their two other runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Ramsey reached on an error, Keck was hit by a pitch. Courtney Hardaway hit a sacrifice bunt moving running to second and third. With two out, Zack Tippitt lined a two RBI single to left-center. That is all the scoring Bethel would need to claim the win.
Game Two
The Bethel offense got off to a fast start in the second game of the double header. Johnathan Deberry drilled a two run home in the bottom of the first over the right center wall. After Keck walked, Hardaway hit a long homer down the right field line and Bethel led 4-0. The Wildcats offense continued to tee off in the bottom of the second. Tippitt reached on an error and scored when Jay Lowery reached on an error. With two runners on, Craig Massey drove a three-run homer to deep right center and Bethel was ahead 8-1. The teams traded runs in the third and the fifth as Bethel led 10-3. Massey hit an RBI double in the third and Tippitt scored on J. Deberry's ground out in the fifth.
But, Bethel was unable to hold on as ONU scored seven runs in the sixth inning. Rusty Edwards had a rough outing as five runs scored, two earned without recording an out. Blake Talbott finished off the sixth but gave up two runs on three hits and a walk. Talbott did strike out the side. With the score ties 10-10, the game was forced to be called due to darkness.
Game Three
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Bethel answered with a run in the bottom half to knot the score. Three straight singles by Ramsey, Hardaway and Keck allowed Ramsey to score on Tipptt's fielder's choice. The Wildcats took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Lowery walked, Massey reached on a fielder's choice and went to third on J. Deberry's double. Massey would score on a wild pitch, J. Deberry would score on Hardaway's double that followed. Bethel exploded for three runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach for ONU. Massey led off with a single, with one out Ramsey singled; Hardaway followed with a RBI double. With two on, Keck launched a three-run homer to deep center. Hunter Deberry singled, stole second and scored on a wild throw.
Turner Cripps picked up the win hurling four innings, allowing one run on five hits, walked four and struck out four. Derek Hinson, Jordan Smith, Jon Patterson all came in for relief work. Blakney pitched the final out and picked up his second save of weekend.
Bethel (2-0-1) will host Harris-Stowe State University on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 for a double header. First pitch is set for 12:00pm. The Bethel will host Mid-South Conference member Pikeville College (Ky.) for a three game series beginning with a single game on Friday, February 26, 2010 with a 1:00pm start.
