FRANKLIN, Tenn. (03.03.10) - Franklin High School hockey goaltender Ian Mangold's signing to play for Bethel's in-line hockey team has two significant firsts associated with it. He is the first player to commit to the Bethel University in-line hockey team and he is the first player ever to be awarded a scholarship to play any level of hockey by a university in the state of Tennessee. He is the son of Kevin and Collette Mangold.
"I'm thrilled for Ian and for Bethel," said Bethel Head In-Line Coach Matt Swinea. "To start the program with a goaltender the caliber of Ian is huge. Not only is Ian a great goalie, he is a good student that qualified for an academic scholarship and is a quality young man. He is the kind on student, athlete and person the in-line hockey program looks for. I'm proud to have Ian coming to anchor the team."
Mangold has started in net for the last two years for the Rebels of Franklin. Previous to that he played in-line hockey in Las Vegas before moving to Williamson County. This past season Mangold was 6-6-1 in goal for the Rebels with a 3.86 goals-against average. He played in the GNASH (Greater Nashville Area Scholastic Hockey) All-Star game for the winning south team. Mangold also plays travel hockey for the Arkansas Chaos.
Mangold is a very quick goalie and controls rebounds well. He hopes to work on his mental focus while playing for Bethel. This past season, Franklin reached the quarterfinals of GNASH cup before falling to Brentwood 3-1.
Mangold had considered attending Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee State or Tennessee before committing to play for Bethel.
Mangold will be majoring in Biology and hopes to work with animals one day.
Bethel will start their inaugural season in the fall of 2010.
