Nina Djokovic works hard in the paint against Jana Cross of Freed-Hardeman; Djokovic led Bethel with 20 points in the loss
HENDERSON, Tenn. (03.05.10) - Although the Lady Wildcats didn't play their best basketball, they only trailed by one point, 28-27, after the first half of play to the Lady Lions of Freed-Hardeman University. But, FHU opened the second half with a 14-2 run that Bethel never seemed to recover from in a 72-60 loss in the TranSouth Semi-finals.

The Lady ‘Cats carried the biggest lead of the first half on Joanna Ortiz's three pointer as Bethel went up 7-2 early. The Lady Lions fought back and evened the score 9-9 at 12:23. From there the teams were never separated by more than four points. Bethel took a three point lead with Jovana Petrovic's second made free throw with 6:22 left in the half. FHU had a three point lead with over a minute left, but Nina Djokovic's basket left Bethel on point behind at the break.

The Lady Lions fast start in the second frame was on the back of Hannah Parsley who hit three 3-pointers in the 14-2 run to start the half. From that point on Bethel never got the lead less than double digits. FHU's Jana Cross was held in check for most of the game and fouled out close to the five minute mark. Maribeth Boehler picked up her fourth foul with 4:22 left and it appeared Freed was going to be at a huge disadvantage in the post. But, Boehler stayed clear of her fifth personal.

Bethel struggled on the boards with 30 rebounds to FHU's 47. Freed controlled the offensive glass with an advantage of 18-9. And uncharacteristically Bethel also struggled at the foul line hitting just 64% for the game (16 of 25).

Djokovic led with 20 points and eight rebounds. She had two assists and on block. Anna Trull scroed 10 points, added one assist and had two steals. Tristian Johnson had 10 points and two steals. Ortiz finished with eight points. Teena Carter and Kashundria Berry had a difficult night each scoring just two points.

Bethel is 21-10 on the season. In the final NAIA women's basketball poll, the Lady ‘Cats were #17. The National tournament field will be announced on March 9, 2010. The national championship bracket will be announced on March 10, 2010 at 3:30pm.
