MARIETTA, Ga. (03.08.10) - The Bethel Wildcats baseball team continued their sizzling start to the season by splitting their double header with the #4 ranked Hornets of Southern Polytechnic University. Bethel took game one 10-2 before losing for the first time this season in game two, 13-3.
 

Game One

Colby Fitzpatrick picked up the win as he improved to 3-0 on the season. Fitzpatrick held down the third most potent offense in the nation going five innings, allowing six hits, two runs, one earned while walking one and striking out three. Dustin Blakney hurled the final two innings with a walk and three hits.

Bethel got on the board in the second inning. Courtney Hardaway singled to lead off the inning; Billy Keck executed a sacrifice bunt; with two outs, Zach Tippitt doubled to right, Hardaway stopped at third; Hunter Deberry delivered a two RBI triple to deep right-center and Bethel led 2-0. SPU got a run in the bottom half of the second to make it 2-1. But, Bethel plated two more runs in the third. Craig Massey singled to lead off the third and stole second. Alex Jackson doubled driving in Massey; Hardaway followed with a single to score Massey and Bethel led 4-1. BU went up 6-1 with two more runs in the fourth. Tippitt singled to left-center. H. Deberry tripled to deep right-center, Tippitt Scored. Jay Lowery reached on a walk. Massey singled to right, H. Deberry scored, Lowery advanced to second. SPU scored once in the bottom half of the fourth to make the score 6-2. For the fourth straight inning Bethel scored with three runs in the fifth inning. Hardaway led off with a double; Keck hit a sacrifice fly to right, Hardaway advanced to third; Shea Thomas was hit by a pitch; Tippitt bunted and reached first on a squeeze play for a base hit, Hardaway scored; H. Deberry singled to load the bases; Lowery walked, Thomas scored; and Johnathan Deberry singled to plate Tippitt and Bethel led 9-2. Bethel would score once more in the sixth. Hardaway singled; Thomas grounded out to the pitcher's mound, Hardaway advanced to second; Tippitt singled, Hardaway scored.

H. Deberry was 3 of 4 with three RBI and a run scored. Hardaway was 4 of 4 with one RBI and three runs scored. Tippitt was 4 of 4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Massey was 3 for 5 with a RBI and a run scored. J. Deberry was 2 of 5 with one RBI.

Game Two

Bethel starting pitcher Nick Purcell had a rough outing as he lasted one inning. SPU scored eight runs on six hits and three walks. Rusty Edwards didn't fair much better in three innings of work allowing four runs on five hits. Jacob Hatchel went 0.2 innings allowing SPU's final run.

Bethel's offense cooled off with the Wildcats scoring three runs on four hits. All three of Bethel's runs came in the fourth inning. Hardaway led off with a single; Thomas singled; Tyler Roberson was hit by a pitch to load the bases; and H. Deberry doubled to clear the bases.

H. Deberry was 1 for 2 with three RBI. Hardaway was 1 for 1 with a run scored and two walks. Thomas was 1 for 2 with a run scored. Lowery was 1 for 2 with a walk.

Bethel is 10-1-1 on the season. After the stop in Marietta, the ‘Cats will travel to Clearwater, Fla. On March, 10, 2010 they Wildcats will play Hannibal-LaGrange College at 9:00am and Northwestern College at 12:00pm. On March 11, 2010 the Wildcats will play Hannibal LaGrange College at 9:00am and Purdue University - North Central at 12:00pm. The Florida trip will conclude with a game against #21 Madonna University on March 12, 2010 at 10:30am.
