CLEARWATER, Fla. (03.10.10) - The Wildcats had a successful first day in Florida for their Spring Break trip. In game one, Bethel defeated Hannibal-LaGrange College (Mo.) 12-6 and in the afternoon they defeated Northwestern College (Iowa) 8-3.
 

Hannibal-LaGrange Game

Four Bethel pitchers combined for the win. Joey Wilder picked up the win going four innings, allowing four runs on three hits, three walks and three strike outs. Blake Talbott threw an inning allowing two runs on two hits and he walked two. Jacob Hatchel hurled one inning allowing just a lone hit. Derek Hinson pitched the final inning walking one and striking out one.

Hannibal-LaGrange plated three runs in the top of the first to take the lead. But, Bethel had a huge bottom of the first scoring seven times. Shea Thomas led off with a walk; Craig Massey walked; Johnathan Deberry hit a sacrifice bunt moving runners to second and third; Thomas scored on a passed ball; Jake Ramsey hit a RBI sacrifice fly to score Massey; Hardaway was hit by a pitch; Bryson Horner walked; Zach Tippitt singled to right, scoring Hardaway; JD Newsom singled to load the bases; Hunter Deberry delivered a bases clearing tripled to left-center; and H. Deberry scored on a passed ball to give Bethel a 7-3 lead after the first. HLGC scored a run in the top of the fourth but Bethel answered it with a run in the bottom of the inning on Hardaway's sacrifice fly to score Massey. Hannibal-LaGrange scored two more in the top of the fifth but Bethel put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth. Thomas reached base on a wild throw; Massey singled; J. Deberry bunted and reached on a hit to load the bases; Ramsey reached first on the fielder's choice, as Thomas was forced out at home; Hardaway hit a two RBI double; Tippitt followed with a two RBI single scoring Ramsey and Hardaway to complete the scoring.

Hardaway was 1 for 1 with two runs scored, three RBI and a walk. Tippitt was 2 for 4 with a run scored and three RBI. H. Deberry was 1 for 3 with a run scored and three RBI. Massey was 1 for 2 with three runs scored and two walks. J. Deberry was 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Northwestern College Game

John Patterson went four innings on the hill to pick up his second win of the year. He gave up three runs on three hits and walked three. Rusty Edwards got his first save of the year going three innings allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two.

Bethel got off to a fast start plating four runs in the top of the first inning. Jay Lowery led off the game with a single; Massey reached first on a fielder's choice, Lowery was forced out at second; Johnathan Deberry was hit by a pitch; Ramsey bunted and reached to load the bases; Hardaway lined a three RBI triple and then scored the fourth run on Billy Keck's groundout as Bethel took a 4-0 lead. Bethel really took control with three more runs in the top of the second. Tippitt led off by hitting his first homer of the year; Lowery reached on a walk; Massey singled to center; J. Deberry lined a two RBI double doubled down the left field as Lowery and Massey scored to put Bethel up 7-0. Northwestern scored three times in the bottom of the fourth but Bethel tacked on the final run in the fifth when J. Deberry scored on a sacrifice fly by Keck.

Bethel improves to 12-1-1 on the season. Bethel will be in action on Thursday, March 11, 2010 with Hannibal LaGrange College at 9:00am and Purdue University - North Central at 12:00pm. The Florida trip will conclude with a game against #21 Madonna University on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 10:30am.
