The Lady ‘Cats didn't help themselves at the start of the tournament. They lost the first game to Martin Methodist 8-2 putting them in the loser's bracket. Coming out of the loser's bracket on Thursday, Bethel defeated Lyon College 3-2 eliminating the Pipers. Then Bethel eliminated the Lady Bulldogs of Cumberland 2-1.
On Friday morning, Bethel put Martin Methodist out of the tournament 3-0. They weren't finished as they sent Union University out 3-0. That set up a championship match-up with Trevecca Nazarene.
Bethel pulled off the improbable as they took the first game 3-1 over the Trojans. Ashton Carnahan went all seven innings allowing just one run on three hits. She walked none and struck out four.
The Lady ‘Cats scored one in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. Shelby Cummings singled, up the middle; Ashley Simmons hit a sacrifice bunt moving Cummings to second then Cummings stole third; Katie Pacifici reached first on the fielder's choice, Cummings scored.
In the sixth Bethel took advantage of some Trevecca miscues. Brittany Edmonds walked; Amanda Renfroe walked; a wild pitch advanced Edmonds and Renfroe; Cummings singled; Edmonds scored; Cummings stole second; a wild pitch scored Cummings and gave Bethel a 3-0 lead. Trevecca would score their one run in the bottom of the seventh.
That win would force a one game winner take all conference title game. Carnahan who had success in the first game against Trevecca started for the Lady ‘Cats. She gave up four runs in five hits including three homers in the first two innings as Bethel trailed 4-0. Carnahan went 4.1 innings allowing five hits and four runs with three walks and two strike outs. Leah Hensley would go the rest of the way, 5.0 innings allowing just two hits while walking one and striking out one.
After trailing 4-0, Bethel plated a run in the fourth. Cummings walked; Simmons singled to left; Pacifici reached base on an error and Cummings scored.
Then in the top of the seventh…
Cary led off with single; Lindsey Davis singled; with two outs Amanda Renfroe walked to load the bases; Cummings reached base on an error, Cary scored; Simmons singled and Davis and Renfroe scored to tie the game at 4-4 and send it to extra innings.
The Lady ‘Cats had a chance in the 8th as Cary led off with a walk and stole second. Edmonds reached on an error as Cary went to third with two outs. Renfroe gave the ball a good ride but flied out to center field to end the inning.
Then in the 9th, Cummings reached on an error but was forced out on Simmons' fielder's choice. Kasey Winsett singled with two outs putting runners at first and second. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch to third and second, but Bethel was unable to plate a run.
In the 10th, the International Tie Breaker Rule was put in place where the player who made the previous inning's last out is placed at second base to start the inning. In the top of the 10th, Cary was put on second and was thrown out trying to steal third. Lindsey Davis singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild throw. But, Davis would be stranded there. With Trevecca batting in the 10th, the runner at second was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and that was followed by a single for the win.
On the first day of the tournament, TranSouth All-Conference Honors were announced. Amanda Renfroe was selected as First Team All-Conference. Katie Pacifici and Ashley Simmons were named Second Team All-Conference.
The Lady Wildcats finish their season with a mark of 25-27 (4-10).
