MCEKZNIE, Tenn. (05.24.10) - Dr. Jerry Wilcoxson has served Bethel in many capacities, but there has been one constant for the last 41 years, he has been the men's golf coach. While Dr. Wilcoxson is giving up his head coaching duties, he still plans helping new coach Monte Cunningham when he can. Although Wilcoxson is scaling back his coaching duties, he is adding to his teaching course load; Wilcoxson has taught classes at Bethel since his arrival in 1967.

"Teaching young men how to improve," said Wilcoxson when reflecting on his years as the golf coach. "Really and truly I'm a teacher; a good coach is actually a good instructor. I'll always reflect on the young men I've had. I hope I helped them become better players but more importantly better people."

In his years at Bethel, Wilcoxson has produced an impressive 1,005-211 record. His team captured the District 24 Championship automatically quailifying the team for the NAIA National Tournament three straight years from 1991-1993. His team also won the 2007 TranSouth Conference Title. In 1970, the team won the VSAC Conference title by defeating UT-Martin.

When Dr. Wilcoxson arrived he served as the baseball coach from 1967-69. He also was the Assistant Men's Basketball coach from 1968-69 under Dr. Doug Hines who learned from the legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp. Wilcoxson had another stint with men's basketball serving as the head coach in 1979-1980 taking over from coach Bennis and went 18-12.

In addition to coaching, Dr. Wilcoxson has served as the Athletic Director on three different occasions.

Bethel Athletic Director Glenn Hayes who had to find Dr. Wilcoxson's replacement said, "He has had a competitive golf program throughout his years as coach. He is well respected as a teacher and a coach. Dr. Wilcoxson has done a tremendous amount for Bethel. Myself and the Athletics staff wish him nothing but the very best."

Coach Cunningham has been coaching the women's golf team and recently captured Bethel's first women's golf TranSouth Conference Championship. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to coach the men's and women's teams. I appreciate what Dr. Wilcoxson has done for Bethel over the least 41 years and what he has meant for the men's golf program," said Cunningham. "Dr. Wilcoxson will still be teaching and on staff; he will be available to provide some of his substantial knowledge and guidance."

On Cunningham's appoint Hayes said, "We're excited about the transition with Monte Cunningham coaching both teams. He has had great success and just recently won the TranSouth Conference Tournament. Coach Cunningham is a natural fit and I think he is up to the challenge."

During his last time serving as Athletic Director, Wilcoxson hired current Bethel Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Britt. Britt shared his thoughts about coach Wilcoxson, "I really appreciate him giving me the opportunity when he hired me. You won't find a finer gentleman, teacher and coach. He's seen a lot during his time here and has been invaluable in helping me and other coaches."

Dr. Wilcoxson will continue teaching full-time as he has since he came to Bethel. During his tenure he has taught 25 different courses.
