2025 Bethel University Athletic Hall-of-Fame Induction & Alumni Awards Ceremonies to Take Place October 31
MCKENZIE, Tenn. – Bethel University will honor three former athletic greats and one contributor with inductions into the prestigious Bethel Athletic Hall-of-Fame Friday October 31. Bethel will also present Bethel's University's Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall-of-Fame Inductions will be held in the board room of the Vera Low Center for Student Enrichment, Crisp Wing. The awards dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with reservations required.
It marks the 45th class to be honored. Six teams and 119 individuals will have been enshrined since 1980.
Here is a look at the 2025 Athletic Hall-of Fame Class:
Brent Buchanan -Men's Basketball (1991)
Brent is #21 in career points scored with 1,255. He is #10 in career assists with 443. He is #11 in career steals with 132. His 57 steals in the 1989-90 season ranks 24th all time. Not bad for a guy who started his career as a walk-on and ultimately earned an athletic scholarship! Brent was an exceptional multi-dimensional player, as not only was Brent a great shooter, ball handler, and passer as an offensive player, but he was also a great, hard-nosed defensive player!
Teammate Dave Jesse said, "We played a triangle and two defense most of the time, and Brent ALWAYS had to guard the other team's best player, oftentimes inside post players...and our conference back in the late 80's/early 90's was littered with All-Americans. Opponents always knew they were in for a battle when they played Bethel College and were guarded by Brent! Although he primarily played as a guard, Brent wasn't afraid to be physical and mix it up inside with the opponents' bigger players, as he was very strong, a great defender, and a fantastic rebounding guard. Then, after exerting tremendous effort on defense, he'd then have to handle the ball and oftentimes bring the ball up the floor against the opponent's press defense in order to run our offense. Brent was a tremendous all-around player in all aspects of the game and was always so supportive of his teammates. If you know Brent personally, as good of a player as Brent was, he is an even better human being! His friendship is unconditional, his loyalty is unwavering, and he's a highly respected member of his community. A true Class Act!! Brent was born and raised at Bethel C.P. Church in Gage, Kentucky, where he is still an active member today. Lastly, he's certainly passed on his athletic genes to his children, as his daughter, Mikee, is currently one of the best players on Bethel's women's NAIA Fab Four basketball team."
Brent Buchanan is deeply honored to be inducted into the Bethel College Basketball Hall of Fame. A lifelong competitor, leader, and team builder, Brent's time on the court at Bethel helped shape his values of perseverance, integrity, and faith—principles that have guided every chapter of his life since.
The son of Bob and Frances Buchanan, Brent grew up as the youngest of five siblings, where he first learned the importance of teamwork, imagination, and family closeness—values that remain central to who he is today.
Recently retired after 27 years in education, Brent dedicated his career to teaching and leading young people. He taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels and coached basketball, golf, and football. For nearly two decades, he served as an administrator and director in McCracken County, always striving to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students, staff, and families. His tenure as principal at Lone Oak Middle School stands out as one of his most rewarding professional experiences, made memorable by the dedicated staff and leadership team he was privileged to work alongside.
Faith and family are the heart of Brent's life. He and his wife, Michelle Hunter Buchanan, are the proud parents of three children. Their oldest, Mikee, is a sophomore at Bethel and a starter for the Lady Cats basketball team. Grady, a 17-year-old junior at McCracken County High School, is an active member of FFA and the school choir. Their youngest, Raylee, is a middle school student at Heath, where she enjoys basketball, serving as a peer tutor, and playing for her favorite coach—her mom.
The Buchanan family are active members of Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Gage, Kentucky, where Brent previously served as youth pastor under the mentorship of Brother Paul Tucker, a fellow Bethel graduate whose faith and friendship continue to inspire the family.
At home on their small family farm in western Kentucky, the Buchanan's enjoy spending time together, playing games, and creating lasting memories. Brent remains grateful for the unwavering love and support of his parents, siblings, extended family, and countless friends who have stood beside him throughout his journey.
Brent extends his heartfelt gratitude to the Hall of Fame Committee for this incredible honor, to his friends and teammates at Bethel—especially Coach Nelson, his staff, Coach Britt, and Mr. Dave McCulley—and to Dave Jessie for his nomination and steadfast friendship. Brent said, "I am humbly blessed with family, faith, and friends. Thank you for believing in me and for making this journey so special."

When your best player is the kind of teammate who brings everyone together, with no jealousy or ego, it makes coaching not only easier but so much more fun. elevated our program to places we had never been before and laid a foundation that continues to shape our success today. Her legacy is not only in her points and accolades, but in the culture and standard she helped set for Bethel basketball."
