Baseball Falls to Blue Mountain

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The Bethel Wildcats and the Blue Mountain Toppers played a single game Tuesday afternoon in McKenzie.

The Wildcats displayed plenty of late-inning grit, but a ninth-inning rally came up just one run short as they dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to the Toppers. Despite being outhit 10-5 on the day, the Wildcats (10-20) remained within striking distance until the final out, utilizing disciplined baserunning and timely situational hitting to pressure the Toppers' bullpen.

The Toppers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, but the Wildcats hung tough behind a gritty effort from the pitching staff. Starter Jacob Walls navigated three innings, allowing only one hit, though he battled command issues with three hit batters.

Bethel's bats came alive in the fourth when Cade Pilkinton ignited the offense with a sharp double. He eventually came around to score on an Evan Cardwell sacrifice, shifting the momentum back to the home dugout.

The Wildcats' biggest surge came in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 3-1, Bethel took advantage of several free passes. Adriel Vega flashed his speed, stealing second base to set up a scoring opportunity. The Cats scored two to tie the game 3-3.

The Toppers scored single runs in the 7th and 8th to lead 5-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, trailing 5-3, the Wildcats refused to go quietly. After Zayden McCaslin singled and advanced, Adriel Vega came through with a clutch RBI to bring Bethel within a single run. With the tying run on base, BMCU's Nolan Wood managed to escape the jam, leaving the Wildcats just 90 feet away from extending the contest.

Wildcat Top PerformersCade Pilkinton (DH): 2-for-3, Double, Run scored, Walk. • Adriel Vega (CF): 1-for-4, RBI, Stolen Base. • Zayden McCaslin (RF): 1-for-4, Run scored, Stolen Base. • Peyton Martin (P): 2.0 IP, 2 Strikeouts, kept the Cats in it late.

The Wildcats will look to shake off this mid-week heartbreaker as they turn their focus back to conference play.

Blue Mountain improved to 17-21.

The Wildcats move back into conference action this weekend, traveling to Henderson to meet the Freed-Hardeman Lions.

The squads play a single game on Friday at 5 p.m. and then face off in a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
