Bethel Rallies to Upset Georgetown 82-74 to Advance to Semifinals

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It is one of the biggest wins in recent history for the Bethel Wildcats.

No. 7-seed Bethel flipped the script to pull off the biggest upset of the tournament to this point with an 82-74 win over second-seeded Georgetown in the Mid-South Conference Men's Basketball Quarterfinals Saturday at Bowling Green Arena.

The Wildcats advance to Sunday's second semifinal and will play No. 3-seed Cumberlands (Ky.) who knocked off No. 6 seed Cumberlands (Tn.)

Bethel (18-11) trailed Georgetown 46-33 three minutes into the second half and 52-42 with 14:08 left in regulation. That's when the Wildcats turned the tables on the Tigers (22-7).

Bethel used the next five minutes to pull even at 57-all with 9:26 left and ultimately built a 77-66 lead with 2:29 remaining in regulation. Over the 11-plus minutes, the Wildcats outscored Georgetown 35-14 to snag their largest lead of the game.

H&W-Dukes Sports Player of the Game Alonzo Rhodes Jr. and Chauncey Hughes III paced the Wildcats to the come-from-behind win. Rhodes posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Hughes added a game-high 27 points.

The Wildcat defense limited Georgetown to just 34.4 percent from the field in the second half after the Tigers shot nearly 49 percent in the opening half. Bethel also forced the Tigers into 16 turnovers.

The Tigers had beaten Bethel 100-62 during the regular season.

Isaiah Mason led five Tigers in double digits with 18 points.

Sunday's game tips off at 7:30 p.m.

Coach Jeff Britt commented, " I am so happy for these young men. They never doubted they could win. They have never quit working all year and tonight is proof of that."

Bethel beat the Patriots 80-69 in McKenzie and lost to the Pats 88-83 late in the season in Williamsburg.
