Wildcats Fall to RV Milligan in Season Opener
PULASKI, Tenn. - The Wildcats opened their spring campaign Friday afternoon with a 4-1 loss to RV Milligan University.
Despite strong effort throughout the lineup, Bethel was unable to overcome Milligan's depth in singles play after a tightly contested doubles point.
Doubles Split
The Wildcats earned a victory at No. 2 doubles as Andrej Jovanovic and Gustavo Santos teamed up for a 6-3 win, showing strong chemistry and control at the net.
However, Milligan claimed the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts by scores of 6-2 and 6-4 to secure the doubles point and take early momentum into singles.
Singles Battle
In singles competition, Milligan captured three straight-set victories at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 to clinch the match.
Mateo Prado provided the bright spot for Bethel at No. 6 singles, delivering a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win to earn the Wildcats' lone point of the afternoon.
Andrej Jovanovic (No. 1) and Kenzo Nishioka (No. 4) were both locked in competitive battles when play concluded, highlighting the fight the Wildcats showed even as the match result was decided.
Coach's Comments
Head coach Derrick Hubble emphasized the value of facing strong competition early in the season.
"Opening against a receiving-votes team like Milligan is a great test for our guys," Hubble said. "We had some strong moments, especially at No. 2 doubles and No. 6 singles, but we have to be sharper in key situations. I'm proud of the way we competed — now it's about learning from this and continuing to improve."
The Wildcats will look to build on the experience as they continue their spring schedule, aiming to sharpen doubles play and convert competitive matches into points in the weeks ahead.
