Lady Cats Drop DH to Cumberland University
MCKENZIE, Tenn. – For the first time in over two weeks, the Bethel Lady Wildcats were back at home Friday hosting conference foe Cumberland University. It would prove to be a tough day however for the Cats as they dropped both games to the visitors from Lebanon. CU won 8-6 and 6-2.
In game one the Phoenix plated three runs on five hits in the first inning. Mariah Clark socked a three-run homer in the top of the third to give Cumberland a 6-0 lead.
The Cats answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Leah Beasley scored on a CU error. Alexa Thrasher drove in Melanie Alexander with an RBI single. In the fifth the Wildcats struck again. Alexis Wheeler reached first on an error by CU's first baseman allowing Alexander and Morgan Hunt to score. Jade Brallier singled driving in Wheeler and Bethel trailed 6-5 after five.
The Phoenix scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh to up their lead to 8-5. The Cats would score an unearned run in the bottom of the inning but would come up two runs short. Kayla Gillespie was credited with Bethel's last RBI.
Cumberland outhit Bethel 14-8 in the game. Lauren Reimsnyder suffered the Wildcat loss. Clark went the distance to pick up the Phoenix win.
Wheeler drove in a run in the bottom of the first in game two.
CU tied the game with a single run in the fourth.
Behind the stout pitching of Bethel's Madison Haught and CU's Emily Cooper the score remained tied until the seventh. The Phoenix scored five runs in the top of the seventh. The big hit was a bases clearing triple by Kenzie France.
Alexander singled in a run in the bottom of the inning but CU closed out the game winning by four. Haught suffered the tough loss while Cooper picked up the complete game win. Cumberland outhit Bethel 7-6. The Wildcats committed three errors.
Bethel fell to 17-13 overall and 9-7 in the league. The Phoenix moved to 15-15 and 10-12.
The two squads go right back at it Saturday meeting in a doubleheader at noon.
