Cats Fall on Senior Day
MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The Bethel Lady Wildcats took No. 4 Freed-Hardeman to task in game two of their doubleheader Saturday afternoon but in the end the Lions prevailed 5-4 in nine innings. FHU won game one earlier 8-1 completing the four-game sweep of the series.
In game one the Lion scored two runs in the first.
Bethel's Maria Murdaugh homered in the bottom of the inning.
Freed came back with four runs in the top of the second with the big blow coming off the bat of Sophie Dunavant who socked a three-run homer to give the Lions a 6-1 advantage.
FHU put the game away with two runs in the top of the seventh for the 8-1 win.
Chloe Winters picked up the win while Kaylie McKinley was charged with the Wildcat loss. Winters had ten strikeouts in five innings. The Lions outhit the Wildcats 11-2.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the series when Melanie Alexander, Alexa Thrasher and Murdaugh scored unearned runs in the first inning of game two. Two FHU errors led to the runs.
Freed-Hardeman scored two runs in the third and two runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 margin.
Bethel's Alexis Wheeler singled in the bottom of the inning driving in Leah Beasley to knot the game at four all.
The Lions scored in the top of the ninth on a double by Annalise Jarnagin. Cassie Hayes scored what proved to be the winning run. Winters was the winning pitcher while Madison Haught suffered the loss. FHU outhit the Cats 14-5.
Seniors Madison White, Alexander, Gillian Grahn, Jade Brallier and Brittney Minor were honored in pre-game ceremonies.
Bethel dropped to 20-26 overall and 12-20 in the MSC. FHU moved to 45-3 and 28-3.
