Wildcats Fall Heartbreakingly Short in Wild Doubleheader at Blue Mountain
BLUE MOUNTAIN, MS – The Bethel Wildcats (12-32) showed immense resilience on Wednesday afternoon, nearly pulling off a massive upset in the nightcap before falling victim to a late-inning surge by Blue Mountain Christian University.
Game 1: Toppers 8, Bethel 1
In the series opener, the Wildcats struggled to find an offensive rhythm against BMCU starter Madison Montgomery. Bethel managed to strike first in the opening frame when Kinsley Nichols led off with a walk and was eventually driven home by a Kalani Hernandez RBI single.
However, the bats went quiet for the remainder of the contest. Fallyn Jordan provided a bright spot with a double, but the Wildcats left 10 runners on base. On the circle, Karma Wilky and Amelia Sherrill battled through six innings, but a four-run fourth by the Toppers allowed the game to slip away.
Game 2: Toppers 10, Bethel 9
The nightcap was a completely different story as Bethel's offense exploded early. The Wildcats hung five runs on the board in the second inning alone, capitalizing on several Topper miscues. Fallyn Jordan continued her hot day at the plate, racking up three hits and three RBIs, while Kinsley Nichols used her speed to wreak havoc, scoring three times and swiping three bases.
Bethel entered the final inning holding a 9-6 lead, seemingly poised to split the day. Chanley Price gave the Wildcats a gritty start, allowing five runs over 4.1 innings, and the team combined for nine hits. However, the Blue Mountain offense found its spark in the bottom of the 7th, reeling off four runs to snatch the victory in walk-off fashion.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats showed the kind of offensive firepower that makes them a threat as they head into the postseason.
Looking Toward the Tournament
The Wildcats will use the narrow margin of defeat as fuel as they transition into tournament play. The ability to jump on a 34-win team early in game two provides a blueprint for success next week.
"It's a tough pill to swallow when you lead most of the way and don't come home with the 'W,' but we proved we can go toe-to-toe with anyone," said Coach Massey. "We saw some real grit from our hitters today, especially Fallyn and Kinsley. We're going into the conference tournament next week with a clean slate and a lot of confidence in our ability to put up runs."
Bethel begins conference tournament action next week, looking to turn these close calls into a postseason run.
