Battle of Two Heavyweights Goes to Overtime, Lady Cats Prevail

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — In a clash worthy of the spotlight, the No. 2 Bethel University Lady Wildcats survived a heavyweight showdown Thursday afternoon, outlasting No. 3 Campbellsville 76–70 in overtime to remain unbeaten in conference play. The matchup featured two of the NAIA's premier programs, and it delivered from the opening tip.

Campbellsville struck first, using early momentum to build a 19–14 lead after one quarter. Bethel responded in the second, tightening its defense and closing the gap to trail just 30–28 at halftime. The third quarter turned into a defensive grind as both teams battled for every possession.

Campbellsville edged ahead behind trips to the free-throw line, taking a 44–39 advantage into the final period, but the Lady Cats showed their poise and experience in the fourth, erupting for 24 points to force overtime at 63–63. Adalyn Koelling hit two clutch free throws with 10 seconds left to tie the game.

From there, Bethel took control. Micah Hart was unstoppable when it mattered most, scoring repeatedly in the extra period to power the Lady Cats to a 13–7 overtime advantage. Hart finished with a game-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting, adding five steals while logging all 40 minutes. Mikee Buchanan delivered a huge performance from beyond the arc, knocking down five three-pointers on her way to 15 points. Madison Hart added 10 points and six rebounds. MJ Simmons chipped in seven points and five assists, and Hallie Turner directed the offense with seven assists and relentless energy.

Bethel shot an impressive 66.7 percent from the field in the fourth quarter and overtime combined, swinging momentum against a Campbellsville team that battled relentlessly at the free-throw line.

After the game, head coach Chris Nelson praised his team's toughness and resolve. "That's as hard-fought a game as you'll see anywhere," Nelson said. "Campbellsville is a championship-caliber team, and our kids just kept responding every time we were challenged. I'm proud of the composure we showed late and the heart we displayed in overtime."

The win moves Bethel to 18–1 overall and 3–0 in conference play, as the Lady Cats continue to prove they are built for heavyweight battles deep into the season.

Campbellsville fell to 16-2 and 2-1.

It was the 25th meeting between the two programs with Campbellsville holding a 20-5 advantage in the series. Bethel has won two  in a row versus the Tigers. It was the first time the Lady Cats have beaten the Lady Tigers in Campbellsville. The Cats beat the Tigers late in the season and in the MSC Tournament in Bowling Green and went on to win the MSC Tournament title last year.

Hart's 29 points gives her 991 career points. She will become the fourth player in program history to join the 1,000-point club. That will possibly happen when the Cats travel to Lindsey Wilson Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip-off. LWC upset Freed-Hardeman Thursday in Columbia.
