Lady Cats Drop First Home Conference Game to Freed-Hardeman
MCKENZIE, Tenn. — No. 2 Bethel saw its perfect home conference mark come to an end Thursday night as No. 5 Freed-Hardeman used a strong opening half and late surge to hand the Lady Cats a 73–59 loss at Crisp Arena.
The visiting Lady Lions (19-1, 4-1) built momentum early, jumping out to a slim 19–17 edge after the first quarter before clamping down defensively in the second. Bethel managed just six points in the period, allowing Freed-Hardeman to carry a 38–23 advantage into halftime.
Bethel (19-2, 4-1) responded with grit coming out of the break. The Lady Cats ripped off a 23-point third quarter, trimming the deficit to just seven heading into the final frame. Madison Hart and Micah Hart led the charge, attacking the rim and getting to the free-throw line as Bethel tried to swing the momentum back in its favor.
However, Freed-Hardeman answered every run. Behind balanced scoring and efficient shooting at the line (17-of-18), the Lady Lions pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Bethel 23–13 to secure the road conference win.
Madison Hart paced the Lady Cats with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Micah Hart also added 18 points, knocking down 9-of-9 free throws. Hallie Turner chipped in 12 points, and Mikee Buchanan finished with eight points and five boards. Bethel struggled from the floor overall, shooting 32.2 percent and just 4-of-23 from three-point range.
"We competed and showed fight in that third quarter, but against a team like Freed-Hardeman you can't afford long stretches where shots don't fall," said Head Coach Nelson. "This one hurts at home, but it's a learning moment. We'll get back to work and be better because of it."
Despite the setback, the Lady Cats remain firmly in the conference race and will look to bounce back quickly as league play continues.
The Lady Cats hit the road, traveling to Cumberlands (KY) Thursday and Georgetown Saturday.
