Lady Cats Battle but Fall to No. 5 Campbellsville in Gritty Home Test
MCKENZIE, Tenn. – The No. 3 Bethel Lady Wildcats went toe-to-toe with one of the nation's elite Thursday night, but came up just short, dropping a hard-fought 63–54 home decision to the No.5 Campbellsville Lady Tigers.
Campbellsville set the tone early, using defensive pressure and second-chance opportunities to build a 16–9 lead after the opening quarter and then extended the margin to 32–23 at halftime. Bethel struggled to find a consistent shooting rhythm early but never let the game get out of reach.
The Lady Cats responded with their best stretch coming out of the locker room, matching the Tigers point-for-point in the third quarter. Bethel's defensive intensity ramped up, forcing tougher looks and turning rebounds into transition chances as both teams scored 19 in the frame. Despite the push, Campbellsville maintained a slim cushion heading into the fourth.
Bethel continued to battle in the final period, cutting into the deficit behind strong interior play and trips to the free-throw line, but the Tigers answered with timely baskets and capitalized on turnovers to close out the win.
Mikee Buchanan led Bethel with a double-double, posting 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Madison Hart added 13 points and six boards. MJ Simmons chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds, providing physical play in the paint, and Hallie Turner contributed six points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Defensively, the Lady Cats won the rebounding battle 43–34 and outscored Campbellsville 20–10 in points in the paint, but turnovers proved costly, as the Tigers converted 21 points off Bethel miscues.
"I loved our fight tonight," said head coach Chris Nelson. "We didn't shoot it the way we wanted, but our effort, our toughness, and our willingness to compete against one of the best teams in the country was there. Games like this prepare you for March, and I'm proud of how our kids battled for 40 minutes."
With the loss, Bethel fell to 22–4 overall and 7–3 in Mid-South Conference play. The Lady Cats will look to respond quickly as they continue conference action, carrying valuable lessons from a high-level test against a national contender.
The Cats host o. 13 Lindsey Wilson Saturday on Senior Day. Action begins at 1 p.m. with senior ceremonies to take place before tip-off.
