Tough Road Loss for Football Cats

Tough Road Loss for Football Cats

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - The Bethel Wildcats suffered a tough 38–9 road loss to Campbellsville University on Saturday afternoon at Finley Stadium.

The Tigers (8-1) struck early and often, setting the tone with a 98-yard opening kickoff return for a touchdown by Ashton Auker just 13 seconds into the game. Bethel (3–4) never fully recovered from the early blow as Campbellsville built a commanding 31–0 halftime lead behind explosive plays and a balanced offensive attack.

First-Half Struggles

Campbellsville quarterback Jett Engle threw two first-quarter touchdown passes — an 18-yarder to Troy Oliver and a 40-yard strike to Tre' Bass — as the Tigers capitalized on short fields and quick drives. A 32-yard field goal from Colin Fratus in the closing seconds of the first quarter pushed the lead to 24–0.

Moments later, Bass added a 60-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, capping a one -play scoring drive that extended the advantage to 31–0.

Despite the lopsided first half, Bethel continued to move the football. The Wildcats actually outgained Campbellsville in total offense, 446–405 and recorded 25 first downs to the Tigers' 13. But turnovers, sacks, and missed red-zone opportunities stalled several promising drives.

Second-Half Effort

After a scoreless third quarter, the Wildcats finally broke through in the fourth. Zachary Clutch drilled a 47-yard field goal early in the period to get Bethel on the board.

Following a Campbellsville touchdown pass from Trenton Cutwright to Roland Hazard Jr. that made it 38–3, Bethel answered quickly. Quarterback Destin Chance connected with Alonzo Russell for a 30-yard touchdown strike, finishing a five-play, 80-yard drive in just 1:33. The extra point attempt failed, leaving the final score 38–9.

Offensive Highlights

Despite the loss, Chance turned in a productive afternoon, completing 30 of 47 passes for 323 yards and one touchdown.

  • Ray Harvey was his top target, catching 12 passes for 149 yards.
  • Alonzo Russell added six receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown, while Micah Jones contributed six catches for 40 yards.

On the ground, Ryan Kirk led the Wildcats with 59 rushing yards, followed by Jordan Cason's 29.

Defensive Standouts

Defensively, Brylan Jordan recorded seven total tackles and a sack, while Malik Brown added two sacks. The Wildcats' defense forced Campbellsville into several punts in the second half and limited them to just seven points after halftime.

Coach's Take

Though the Wildcats finished on the wrong end of the score, their ability to move the ball and battle until the final whistle showed resilience. Bethel's strong offensive numbers and second-half improvement offer positives to build on despite the tough road result.
