Wildcats Battle to 0-0 Draw Against Cumberland in Defensive Showdown
MCKENZIE, Tenn. – In a match defined by grit, discipline, and defensive excellence, the Bethel University Wildcats and Cumberland University Phoenix battled to a 0-0 draw Friday evening at Wildcat Stadium. The result moves Bethel to 7-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play, while Cumberland sits at 9-1-3 overall and 1-0-2 in the Mid-South Conference.
The Wildcats controlled much of the pace and possession throughout the match, firing 14 total shots with 10 on goal, but were repeatedly denied by Cumberland keeper Eric Zalaya, who turned in an impressive 10-save shutout.
On the other end, Bethel's goalkeeper Diego Camargo remained steady as ever, recording one key save to preserve his fifth shutout of the season. The back line anchored by Juan Diego Corral, Ishmael Fuseini, and Enock Owusu limited the Phoenix to just five total shots, only one of which was on target.
Bethel generated its best opportunities late in the first half through Prince Badu, who registered three shots on goal, and Gregory Cousins, who kept pressure on the Cumberland defense with his pace and movement. Despite several near misses, the Wildcats couldn't find the breakthrough.
Both sides showed their physical edge as the match wore on. Bethel saw yellow cards issued to Sa-Jar Blair (18') and Souleymane Balde (72'), while Cumberland's Jostin Angel was booked in the 13th minute.
Head Coach JJ Malang praised his team's effort and composure afterward:
"We created chances and defended as a unit," Malang said. "It's always tough against a team like Cumberland — they're organized and dangerous in transition. Our guys stayed locked in for 90 minutes, and that's something to build on as we move forward in conference play."
The Wildcats will return to action next week as they continue Mid-South play, looking to extend their unbeaten streak and remain among the league's top contenders.
